Description Random doodles to help me chase away the college paper mind rot. The vixen is Lena, and is copyrighted Mitch de la Guardia. He was telling me about her last night, and I just had to try my hand at her. The other two are my characters, a grumpy American bison, and a wolverine, and are copyrighted Lauren Banks. (Hopefullly you can tell which is which.) ^_^

Hey, can ya help me out with something? My canine anatomy sorta sucks. Have you made any tutorials? Or a piece of scrap art of a wolf/coyote/fox (lovin' the 'yotes) in a generic pose that I can use for reference? I'd be ever so thankful. The way you draw is simply amazing, and, judging by the comments you've posted, you seem to have a heart of gold as well. Keep up the good work!

Hey there waffle. I don't have any myself, though I am hoping to do a various wolves/coyote/jackals/various wild dogs etc. tutorial someday. I just don't feel like I am at a point artistically where I can make a decent one yet. But, here are some tutorials my canine loving friends really like:

- [link] (wolf head and body tut)
- [link] (wolf snarls)
- [link] (wolf paws)
- [link] (wolf teeth)

Those are the ones I see linked often, and I tried searching for more, but couldn't find a coyote tutorial.

Quick tips on skulls:

-Coyote: The head is very flat, with almost no bend between the eyes and the hose bridge. A thinner, sharper skull overall.
[link]
-Domestic Dog: 90% bend between eyes and nose bridge. Dog dentition tends to be funky (different teeth number, underbites, overbites, crowded teeth, spaced out teeth, etc.). Dogs also tend to have higher, domed heads, larger eyes showing eye whites, etc. Traits you can find described if you look into neoteny in dogs.
[link]
-Gray Wolf: Slight bend between eyes and nose bridge. A rounder, thicker skull overall.
[link]

Also, wolves have shorter tails then many think. A wolf tail usually ends at its "hocks". [link]

Beyond different subspecies, winter coats and ranges (ie. Eastern vs. Western coyotes) affect an animals' appearance.

I'm not sure if I have any generic canine templates (I don't think I do. I think all the wolves and such in my gallery were either done for Wolfmovie or commissions, and are therefore not copyrighted to me, but I'll take a look, and please feel free to ask if there is an image you would like to use). Hope that helps, and eager to see some work from you.

Thanks for the links. I'll post some of my stuff as soon as I get a scanner. I'm flat broke right now. Not sure what to make of the skulls tho, they just look different without all the skin and stuff.I'm not really trying for photogenic or textbook accuracy, I'm going for a semi-cartoony style like yours or Kay Fredewa's(sp?) or Frisket's. Just realistic enough that it doesn't look like Balto, y'know. Thanks for all the advice!
