Whenever my friend says, "Don't leave me," I'm just like, "Who said I was?"

Actually, contrary to popular belief, Sans does not remember any previous timelines; he's just aware that they happened. He's also trained himself to be able to read nuances so well that if he were to encounter somebody who remembers previous timelines (like Flowey or, more importantly, you), he can make guesses as to what happened in them by observing their actions and facial expressions. So, he most likely knows that there's been timelines in which Papyrus dies, but he can't remember any of them directly.
Don't feel bad, I thought the same thing for a while too; it's an easy mistake to make. And it doesn't invalidate this comic either - if you noticed, most main characters in the game have a "have we met before?" reaction to you when you reset, so they seem to have have subtle, subconscious memories from previous timelines. Knowing Sans and his heightened level of awareness, it's very plausible that those subconscious memories manifested as a horrible dread that his brother might die.

That's a nice belief, I've never seen it that way, and it would explain why you can kill him twice in genocide run... But I also like to believe that Sans might actually remember stuff, he just knows that anything he might do is useless. Just as a matter of curiosity... You say this because there is an actual information (like, Toby Fox stated this) or was it a conclusion based on what the game shows?
Undertale has many unsolved mysteries, so I guess the fans actually create their own interpretations of the cheracter's stories... My interpretation of Sans has always been that he remembers things as they happened, so this is quite an interesting point you have.

It's based on actual information in the game - firstly, there's no reason Sans should remember any of the timelines while the other monsters don't, since you need a high amount of Determination like Flowey in order to remember them (although there is evidence that Sans has some Determination, so maybe his memory is a little better), and secondly, his dialogue and general behavior wouldn't make much sense if he clearly remembered everything. For example, during the final battle with him, Sans keeps track of the number of times you died (and if you came back from killing him) based on your facial expression, and it's very clear based on his dialogue that he's only making guesses. Accurate guesses, but still guesses nonetheless.

I see. My question was mainly because I'm making a fan comic story, and in this story Sans remembers stuff. So if it was an official information, I'd probably change the story. It's a good theory, though. I guess both are possible (remembering or not). In my peronal interpretation (in which is based my fan story, of course), Sans would have become able to remember the previous timelines once he became aware of their existence, as if... there is a spider in your room and you are arachnofobic.. If you don't know it, you are ok and perfectly able to sleep. But once you become aware of it, it begins to scare you, you can't sleep or even stay in the room... Like some kind of phycological effect.
Funny you talked about him knowing the amount of times you died... Because it would be sooo hard to make a diference in your expression from like... 4 to 5. hahaha! This is a part that doesn't make much sense to me. I always thought about him making fun of your angry face + showing off that he knows exactly how many times you died.
I actually like both theories. Not remembering is very interesting too. Maybe I'll explore it in future fan art. Anyway, Sans is an awesome character! XD

I think it's completely plausible for him to, like, piece together information from his research and maybe his own dreams or something to get kind of a general idea of what's happened in other timelines. Remember, before you showed up, Flowey had reset the timeline many, many, many times (hundreds, if not thousands of times, it's implied), and doing every possible combination of events it would be possible for him to do. And yes, I also think it's completely plausible that the fact that Sans is aware of the repetition makes him more perceptive to them and better at retaining memories from them, especially since he's keeping an eye out for signs of them. Combine that with the sheer number of times that it's happened, and personally, I'd be extremely surprised if Sans wasn't haunted by the thought/subconscious memory of his brother dying over and over again, regardless of if he actually remembers it happening. Heck, one could argue that him not being able to remember it makes it worse in a way, since he can't prepare himself for it or come up with any ideas to stop it.
And yeah, it is pretty crazy that he can keep track of the number of times that you died just by looking at your face... I don't know how realistic they are, but I have heard stories about people who are so ridiculously good at reading the subtle details in a person's face/body that they can practically read their minds.

Yeah, it's a good theory. I don't know, for me it could be any of those situations. XD
Actually... now that you described it, I realized in my "story" I have kind of both... Because at first he would not remember... then he'd start having nightmares and being hauted... But after so long he'd actually start to become aware of it and remember... So "now" he'd actually be able to remember it all. As if... what you said would have been a stage before he started remembering... BUT the idea is kind of crazy haha. And of course, this is just MY interpretation. I'm just saying what I had invented for Sans. I really liked your theory, though! I think it's totally possible.
I think both of the situations are extremely horrible for him. I can't choose a "worse" one. Sans is such a good character! Whatever it is, it's incredible!

I know he is! I can hardly stop thinking about him, he's everything from funny and charming to thought-provoking and tragic, and everything in between! And it all ties together in a way that all makes sense! Toby Fox is a genius!
