Hi Matt,
I wouldn’t call this ‘inking’ really. You level adjusted the original line art and then filled in the blacks. Now while this does give an ’inked’ look and some people might see the black lines and say, ‘good enough’, there really is a lot more thought that needs to go into it. Remember that inking is drawing, and digitally inking doesn’t chance that. You should still be digitally rendered out all of the line work as you‘ve done in some of the previous pieces in your gallery. Just because these pencils are tighter doesn’t mean you should take short cuts. It’s the inker's job to produce a finished illustration that is easy to read so that all of the information in the story is conveyed to the reader.
The penciler will often leave some parts of the illustration less finished then others. This is where the inker comes in. With this piece, Carlo did a nice job of rendering shadows on Deadpool, but put very little in the way of light source indication for the guns in Deadpool’s hands or the items on his back. Carlo also has a drawing style that has very little change in line weight. So when inking this style of pencils you should keep that in mind and add shadows and line weights where needed to solidify the light source.
Another thing to always keep in mind is ‘What am I drawing?’. Look at each individual item and determine what type of material it is made of and what lines or textures can I use to convey that. You want to make sure that the guns look like guns, the grenades look like grenades, and the belt straps are different then the belt buckles. Again, Carlo’s style is fairly open in some spots so there is room to work here.
Even if you are just trying to clean up the pencils for a colorist to use with out inking there are a lot if little spots that could be better cleaned up here. Like the line from the hand gun in DP’s belt that is crossing into the x belt buckle. The white eraser line just above DP’s right hand knuckles. The tangents at the top of the right hand gun between the scopes and the RPG. The random dots that have appeared from the darkening of dust specs on the original pencils.
Overall, you can do way better then this. I’d like to see you take the time to fully render this and the Yu pieces you’ve posted and not just darken the pencil art. Be an artist. Show me what Matthew Waite can bring to the table, not how photoshop can darken the pencils.

I hope this helps you understand inking a bit better. If you have any questions or want more tips feel free to ask. We only grow as artists by constantly evaluating our work and striving to do better.
I’ll keep my eye on you and I look forward to seeing new art.
Take care,

Yeah feathering is tricky, and doing it digitally makes it even more so. Manga Studio is a bit friendlier of a program then PS for somethings like that. If you're set on digital inks you might look into trying a few different programs to see which work best for what. Also remember to practice drawing the old fashion way as well as digitally because they are the same motions just different tools.
There are some guys working fully digital around here. I'd recommend keeping an eye on them and asking them for tips occasionally. Like Mike Norton.

Keep at it and don't let pencils intimidate you from practicing on them. That's the only way to improve.
Take care, Matt.

Oh yeah this was what I like to call a cop out ink, I have a couple people that like this style cause they want there pencils o be true, this piece was mostly for my color practice (which I thought I would get to quicker) ... This piece and the two lenil pieces are done in the darkening of the lines and fill in blacks. Everything else is done in the 'traditional' way digitally. the main thing is the feathering, I can seem to get it down.
