So, now that I've read "Mockingjay", "Divergent" and "Insurgent" (haven't read "Allegiant" yet), I want to say something...

...namely, I want to apologize for being so harsh on Tris while putting Katniss in a pedestal.

I now think that Tris is better than Katniss, and that "Divergent" is better than "The Hunger Games".

The thing is, Katniss is built up as this tough, no-nonsense badass. That means that, when she starts whining and crying, when she starts yelling at everyone to rescue Peeta (instead of rescuing him herself), it destroys her as a character. And her being so willing to trust President Coin destroys whatever shred of intelligence she had left.

It takes three books just to kill Snow, and the story portrays it as a meaningless victory because of Coin's rise to power.

Tris, on the other hand, is not really built as a "badass". A brave and noble hero, yes, but not a "badass". That means that, when she has emotional moments, it doesn't affect her as a character.

Tris is a lot like the Doctor from "Doctor Who", they are both noble heroes who prefers to use wit and intelligence and common sense rather than brute force, Tris and the Doctor defeat their enemies because they are smarter than their enemies, while Katniss defeats her enemies because she's "stronger" or "tougher" than her enemies.

Tris confronted President Jeanine and thwarted her plan in the FIRST book. And she kills President Jeanine in the second book. That means she gives complete defeat to Jeanine in the first book, and death in the second book. Katniss gave President Snow complete defeat and death in the THIRD book of a TRILOGY.

And of course, when Tris saved the Dauntless from Jeanine in the first book, it gave her a team of highly trained, efficient, valuable allies in the second book. Katniss always stood alone, she always seemed disgusted by the very idea to have friends at her side to aid her in battle. And the best allies Katniss had were a baker and a perpetual drunkard.

So, to all the fans of Tris and "Divergent"...I'm sorry. You were right all along.

Yeah...no, I don't think so.

Tris is "tough" in the same way Rapunzel and Anna are "tough".

Seriously, Tris is a Disney Princess. She cries, she whines, she constantly has traumatic flashbacks, and constantly has to be rescued by Four.

She had several opportunities to kill President Jeanine, and she never does!

She WANTS to be Katniss, but there's only one Katniss.

Katniss is not a Disney Princess. Katniss doesn't whine or cry. Katniss doesn't need to be rescued by a man. Katniss rescues men. Katniss is tough, as tough as the skin of a rhino. She fights for her freedom, and she fights to win.

Kill one of Tris' loved ones, and she stands there, paralyzed and in shock. Kill one of Katniss' loved ones, and you are good as dead, as Katniss will hunt you down and WILL NOT STOP until an arrow pierces your skull.

Tris may be a Divergent, but Katniss is the Girl Who is on Fire. And fire beats divergence any day of the week.

Tris squirmed when she saw a burger patty.

She SQUIRMED.

Katniss is a million times better than Tris. There's a reason her codename is "The Girl Who Was on Fire".

To be fair, I'm not starting that discussion with you. Primarily, because you're comparing apples and bananas right now.Β
Secondly, you did not really answer my question; did you read the book or watch the movie - which really is all I wanted to know?

I read all three "Hunger Games" books, so what's your point?

amyarrow In reply to GokuMartin [2014-05-20 16:33:00 +0000 UTC]

No, have you read Divergent or seen the movies?
My point is you falsely accuse Tris of something she only does in the movies, but not in the books. Which is even more unfair to compare her to what Katniss is in the books.

I have read the books (they are wonderful <3) but I have not yet gotten the chance to see the movie - I went on holidays a few days after the movie came out in the UK, and I only came back yesterday, so I haven't managed to see it yet. Hopefully soon!

I like it- But in the book, aren't her raven tattoos on her right shoulder? 'Cause on page 49, when she got the bullet wound in her right shoulder, and her father was cleaning it, they saw the raven tattoos. Sorry, big fan.

And wow, you must have an amazing memory for details! All I remember is that the tattoo was between her heart and her collar bone, so I checked how other people were drawing it, and drew it on the same side as themΒ :)

Yeah, I had just seen the trailer, and so I decided to read the book, and I got to page 449, and I was like, WHOA! I'm not CERTAIN, because it never actually SAYS it was the right shoulder, but it implies it.Β

walkingnorth In reply to Noodle-Brain [2014-01-26 14:17:38 +0000 UTC]

Possibly it's a consistency error as the heart is on the left-hand side of the body, but, as you say, Tris was shot on the right-hand side.... hmm, we'll probably never know XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Noodle-Brain In reply to walkingnorth [2014-01-26 23:27:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. And in the movie- It's on the left, and Veronica Roth probably would've been able to tell them if it was wrong... Oh, well. I am picky.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

walkingnorth In reply to Noodle-Brain [2014-01-27 06:47:36 +0000 UTC]

If it is a consistency error it's not the only one - in the first published version of Insurgent Tris shot a gun near the end of the book when she shouldn't have been able to. Veronica Roth even made a blog post apologising for the mistake and I think that in the later versions of the book they changed it to Christina shooting the gun. Even published authors make mistakes ;)
