Description The Micrathena come in slightly varied coloration.  For some odd reason, tho, the ones in my front yard are always black and white while the ones in the back yard are brown.  Here is a big beautiful female.  Males are much smaller and I haven't seen any building webs since early summer.  It is said that males don't build webs at all but by direct observation I can tell you that they do.

Thank you    we always have a few in the back yard each summer but it is the only place I've ever seen this coloration...

Those are very similar to a fave of mine the Orchard Orweavers that we have so many of in the summer.  They are beautiful!

These spiders strangely enough are actually my favorites! ^^ I saw one out in the woods a couple of days ago spinning a web! I also saw a harvestman spider foraging for food right below it.

It does, doesn't it.  It is believed that they are for self defense.  Critters like birds or such would think they are too spikey to eat!
