Description Celithemis eponina - Halloween Pennant
This guy was very protective of his perch. It was high up and at the edge of a pond.  This Halloween Pennant skimmer is in their typical position of being perched at the tip of a stem or weed stalk.

They are widespread throughout eastern U.S. and CanadaSexual activity normally occurs between 8 and 10:30 am.  Males will normally wait for females to come to them around the edge of ponds while on a favorite perch.  Their six legs are covered with spurs and are used to grasp items. They are rarely used for walking.  The larval stage can be anywhere from a few days to a few years.  All adult Halloween Pennants catch their prey during flight.

I like the contrast in this picture between the twigs and dragonfly in the foreground and the flat, plain blue background. Even though the dragonfly occupies but a small fraction of the space in the frame, it is clearly the main subject and is the most eye-catching thing within it. The lighting is bright and crisp, and highlights the foreground nicely. If anything, I do wish that the picture was clearer; a off-putting grainy texture is perceived when this picture is closely viewed, and I would like to see the dragonfly more clearly because it is a striking-looking insect. That said, I still like this picture for its composition and subject alone.

Thank you for taking the time to do this, and for your honesty!  I get that graininess more often than I would like and have had this pointed out tome before.  I think it comes mostly from the fact That I often crop in very closely to enhance the size of the subject.  I need to learn to get past this.  I think your critique was quite fair.  Thanks!

Thou art welcome! To be honest, I often have the same problem when photographing small animals such as insects and songbirds because the "zoom" on my camera only goes so far and the only way I can make the picture about the animal is by cropping it and compromising the picture quality.
