Description THIS GIRL, that's who.

Alpha Sapphire was a gift from my parents for finishing the first term of year 3. I wound up loving it so much, I ended up posting an illustrated playthrough of that game on my tumblr.

This is the team I ended the game with (not counting Steven's shiny Metagross), and in general my default team with this game:

- Dulaman the Sceptile
- Celine D'Eon the Latias
- Badger badger badger mushroom mushroom! the Breloom
- Lohengrin the Gallade
- Wiggle-Biggles the Beautifly

Have my nickname skills earned me the title of Official Name Rater yet? Am I one of the cool kids now?

Wiggle-Biggles took out Sidney's entire team in a clean sweep (quiver dance twice, and if you survive, you can spam Silver Wind leisurely and sustain no damage). ;w; And I do love my three boys in green.

Late words are late. :"D

Nicky, you're already one of the cool kids. Biggles is already cooler than Sidney and you make Glacia seem like a furnace! |D

Seriously though, I love all the different designs and the way you captured each of those moments in your playthrough. And just look at those smiles... it's great you were able to enjoy the game to the level you did. And you even got your Gallade, so all's well that ends well.

By the way, what did you think of the Delta Episode?

What a coincidence, I just finished OmegaRuby myself! I also started with a Sceptile, they're so wonderful.
How have you been? I don't know if we've spoken since I changed my username from Morganacard.

Oddly enough, I never used Sceptile before this run - and I honestly didn't like them before! Dulaman was a ton of fun to use, though -even without the exp share pumping up the whole team into crazy overleveled hellbeasts, Sceptile is really speedy.

And yes! I recognise your username!

Back in the day on classic RSE, Sceptile was my 'mon of choice. I almost always had a Sceptile, a Mightyena, and an Aggron. And once again, I did!
Oh, good. How have you been?

What's the story behind Lohengrin's name?  I feel like it's a Nordic mythology reference of some kind...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wanlingnic In reply to WolfpackDragonfly [2015-06-11 18:37:52 +0000 UTC]

Lohengrin's a fairytale about a Knight. He's destined to be carried away by a swan boat if he ever reveals his true name - but then he marries Princess Elsa, who is an idiot and forces him to tell her. Of course this ends horribly for both parties, with Lohengrin never returning to his love, and Elsa dying from heartbreak.

The moral of the story is that Elsa's the worst Disney Princess ever.

It's porbably more obvious in his mega-evolved form, where I gave him a couple feathers: wanlingnic.tumblr.com/post/110…

wanlingnic In reply to WolfpackDragonfly [2015-06-12 17:28:17 +0000 UTC]

It's German. The relative obscurity may or may not be due to the media's obsession with Grimm fairytales as Germany's only exports. XD

Awww, nooooo, if I had a dollar for every time someone's told me the let it go joke, I'd have enough to do my own sexist animated snow queen movie. ;w;

WolfpackDragonfly In reply to wanlingnic [2015-06-12 17:46:36 +0000 UTC]

That's not true, there's cars and beer.  (And rocket technology if you really want to get technical.)

Sexist?  I didn't think that movie was sexist.  Abiet I think it's overhyped and really only does a few things different/interestingly, but I wouldn't say sexist.

wanlingnic In reply to WolfpackDragonfly [2015-06-13 08:16:35 +0000 UTC]

Well, that does depend on how you look at it. On the surface, it's a passable disney movie, but it's also lauded by critics as a feminist masterpiece while it's really... not. The sexism comes from it subtly degrading its female characters, while patting itself on the back and claiming they've fixed the patriarchy once and for all.

If it's something you're interested in, I collected quite a few bits of criticism on my blog. Railing on this movie's like my private hobby, shhhh.

- Only the women are forced to have the same face while the men are diverse: wanlingnic.tumblr.com/post/635…
- Allegedly it's because the women HAD to be animated to look beautiful at all times: wanlingnic.tumblr.com/post/635… which is evident when Elsa is exerting herself: wanlingnic.tumblr.com/post/693…
- Compared to the source material, half the women in the original were cut out or replaced by men: wanlingnic.tumblr.com/post/638…
- At no point in the movie are women given autonomy and power: wanlingnic.tumblr.com/post/847…

WolfpackDragonfly In reply to wanlingnic [2015-06-13 13:05:32 +0000 UTC]

- I'd say technology limitations, but then again this if effin Disney we're talking about here, so yeah that's weird.
- Okay sure, but let's be honest here, nobody is gonna go to a movie with an ugly female lead.  It's an unfortunate part of our society.  (And before you rattle off some TV show with a heavyset female lead, let me remind you that TV can get away with a LOT more than movies.)
- ...yeah that's f'ed up.
- *thinks back over the movie* ...holy crap you're right.  O_o

On the general side of things though, I've got my own criticisms:
> Why was there a villian?  They didn't need a villian.  I would have like the movie so much more if it had just been about these two sisters working through their problems instead of some weird royalty conspiracy.  It just seemed unnecessary.
> WTFak was that ending?  Disney, that was SAPPY, even for you.
> Christoph existed...why, exactly?
> They removed Anna's memories in the beginning...why?  Wouldn't it have been easier to keep them so that she knew why Elsa was a shut-in, thereby preventing her from being so careless and starting the whole plot of the movie?...oh wait...Disney, shame on you for using plot sealant.

((I SERIOUSLY apologise for bombarding you with replies this long, so thank you for taking time to read them. ;w; You've unlocked my inner core, and it's deep nerdy love for fairytales.))

I can answer a little of those questions for you.  If you're familiar with the source material, the Reindeer belonged to a teenage robber bandit girl Anna/Gerda's age, whose family held Gerda captive, but had come to love her as a sister. On learning about Gerda's quest to find her sibling again, the girl offers to lend her a reindeer and helps her escape from the other bandits. The robber bandits are of 'swarthy complexion', with dark eyes and skin... which makes it even more uncomfortable when you realise they turned the robber girl into a white, male love interest.

Kristoph exists for aesthetic purposes: one of the most iconic images of the original is Gerda riding the reindeer to the north pole. Kristoph serves a dual purpose of making the reindeer rider a buff masculine hero so the delicate princess doesn't have to be seen piloting an ungainly beast of burden (as opposed to a pretty horse) while also giving us a forced romance so disney can market him as a prince (which also undermines the 'you can't marry someone you just met' moral).

Hans exists to allow Elsa to look blameless. I've mentioned before Elsa has no autonomy - largely in part to Hans' intervention. He is evil so Elsa doesn't have to be, which allows her to be pure and untainted. But at the same time, this also makes her weaker as a character because it strips her of any authority or power; it allows her only to react, and never have to face up to problems she caused (i.e. her entire kingdom had to freeze and she doesn't ever have to take responsibility for it) because the audience is tuned to see Hans as a 'villain', and blame him for everything.

I agree that attractive leads helps sell tickets, but you can easily google search for the storyboards of Elsa's let it go song. The storyboarders gave her a range of expressions - none of which were allowed in the film to keep her looking pretty at all times. Pretty leads are important, but leads looking pretty every single second? That's just silly.

I'm not great at explaining my thoughts, but you two have said just about everything for me.  Apart from the boys versus girls overall mentality.  You have two girls for "good", two boys for "evil", and one boy and snow...person...thing? who are more plot devices than anything else.

Actually, just about everyone is.  The main characters don't fulfill the role of main characters, two are plot devices, and two add extraneous plot, so the entire cast is a waste of time.

If we cut out all the unnecessary characters (who funnily enough, are all men), we have the opportunity to create a better story.  I've got two!  And neither of them have conflict!

I feel sorry for all the people worked long hours on the visuals for this film.  I know firsthand how much all this takes, and to see it squandered on lacking design and unmemorable ideas...

I've never had any mood issues with periods, besides sheer pain and hating it.

wanlingnic In reply to CeberusTwice [2015-06-24 09:21:48 +0000 UTC]

Aww, well I'm certainly glad you agree!

Kristoph helps change the boys are evil /girls are good dichotomy, but the audience accepts him wholeheartedly as a good hero... which is just as problematic when you realise he spends the whole movie criticizing and belittling Anna for her choice to marry Hans. Hans, up to that point, was kind and polite. Marrying him after discovering you two had so much in common isn't a bad idea - in a way Kristoph's kind of a bigger asshole than the villain!

But the biggest problem is the one you mentioned. Characters cant be defined by their role in the plot. We spend a full song learning Rapunzel's and Belle's interests and hobbies, and when it's Anna's turn, we only she's 'excited' and Elsa's 'anxious'. The idea that they could be role models when a cardboard standee or a lamp could fufil their roles is laughable.

(I'm a writer m'dear, I'm pre-programmed to read long things.)
(And on the subject of nerdy cores, mines a stack of Star Wars RPG books and a copy of the Hobbit.  :3 )

...D#MMIT DISNEY!  Would it kill you to have a bit more enthically diverse cast!?  XC

So Disney obviously hasn't been to colder climates, because they'd know that in reality any type of deer is graceful as all heck.  Actually, why haven't they had somebody riding a deer yet?  Wouldn't that be a great visual for a princess of the forest or a dryad-type creature?... actually I'm writting that down and using that for one of my stories, it's too good to waste.

...well then people are effin stupid because even with Prince Uneeded, A GOOD PORTION OF THE MOVIE IS HER FAULT.  The blizzard was her having a mood swing, the snow monster was her giving life to her cold-shouldering, and I just realized how much it sounds like Elsa was on her period in the movie.  o_oU

Well to be fair, I think Disney was fearing a repeat of the derpy Black Widow face meme.  But yeah, it does kinda make her seem lifeless and...COLD.  *rimshot*
