Me personally? I don't have anything really to sell, since I really only have one of everything right now. But we do have websites that sell all that stuff.

A short list of them.

1. At The Front
2. Man The Line
3. WWII Impressions

Those are the main sites I look at so far. Otherwise I mainly buy from stores first hand.

Yeah at all the events I attend there is so much history around. It's a very bennificial hobby to get into.

If you don't mind my asking, how did you get into this stuff?
It's one thing to see these awesome machine in a demo, something else entirely to engage in a big operation like this, multiple AFVs maneuvering, tossing satchel charge at a halftrack, etc...
Did you have to do some special training?

Oh no, it's no problem. I got into WWII from Medal of Honor. Then after that I started drawing and getting more into the history. After watching so many games and movies and looking through books, I wanted to try and get a first hand look into the history.

I looked online for a reenacting group in California. I got in contact with some one in a group and he invited me to go to an event. After that there was no other hobby I wanted to do.

And the main difference between other reenactments and ours is that our's isn't scripted. We choose a date and time in history, dress in the appropriate uniforms and go out and let the battle take it's cource. So basically any side can win. We have objectives to take or defend, and who ever get's the most or holds their ground the longest wins the day.

And you go through some small training while your in a group as well. They teach you how to march, do rifle drills, and teach you small unit combat training.

There are so many possibilities to this hobby, no two are the same.

Very impressive stuff! Who is in charge of supplying all of the materiel and AFVs? Is all the armor coming from one collection? Delivered on flatbeds? The logistical issues are like a real military operation... and who pays for GAS? Running just one Sherman for an hour is like running a bunch of Hummers all day!

warman707 In reply to Rob-Cavanna [2010-06-22 18:54:16 +0000 UTC]

Well the first few reenactments people in your group can help supply you with a uniform and a weapon, but after 2 battles or so they expect you to get your own uniform set up.

But most of the vehicles are personal collection, or from museums. And usually the unit pays for gas with our unit fee and what not. So what ever we put into the group makes the world go round. haha!

And yes all of our military vehicles are delivered to the locations on flat bed trucks...or in this case big rigs. Some people also just tow their jeeps on the back of their own cars or trucks.

Wow. Thanks for the info, man. I find this stuff fascinating. It's as close as you can get to history, right? Living it.
Dang... private collection! I want my own Sherman! Oh, yeah. I'll take that over a porche for my mid-life crisis!

No problem man! If you have any other questions, I would be more than welcome to answer them.

And yup, that's why we call it "living history" haha!

And I know right? Some people just have money to spend. And also yeah! Who wouldn't want a tank? haha!

I probably will have more questions... and appreciate your insight very much.
Always found WWII totally fascinating, but have done more serious research in the past few years for this project: [link]

Of course, there's only so much you can learn from reading a book.
I'm glad for the opportunity to consult w/ someone who's actually hung around vintage armor and breathed the fumes.

** OK, whimsical little question; if you had a rich relative offering you one AFV of your own from their vast collection, what would you pick? (sticking to WWII armor).

warman707 In reply to Rob-Cavanna [2010-06-24 03:09:21 +0000 UTC]

Yeah man that's what I thought as well. You can only get so much out of a book. But to be there to hear feel and "breath" the history, it's on a whole new level.

And yeah you get used to trailing behind some tanks and AFVs and get that fresh batch of Disel fuel in the morning. haha!

And what would I pick?....hum....tough question. Although I have had more interaction with the Stuart tank, it's a cool little vehicle. But if there was anything else I would choose that isn't really "armored" would have to be a willys jeep. Easier to transport, and a little cheeper on the gas front. haha!

Rob-Cavanna In reply to warman707 [2010-06-24 13:50:29 +0000 UTC]

Despite being under-gunned and lightly armored, the Stuart was still popular w/ crewmen while it lasted. -Why they called it 'the Honey'. There's a nice one sitting in the middle of my town: [link]

Willys jeep would be much easier to own and maintain. And you could actually use it on a regular basis if you wished.
I can't answer that question at all. Perhaps a nice armored car.
