Description

Soft paws sounded on the ground and eyes flashed like ember. Alana ran through the city, her fur dancing in the wind and her tail streaming out behind her. Images of her past flashed in her mind as she ran and she stopped with a growl. She looked up, seeing the sun peek over the sky. She would be safe. She yawned and watched as the bright light flooded into the city. She smiled at the sounds of painful hisses not far from behind her.

"That'll teach you to follow me at night." she smiled. She looked around and scented the air. "Must be in Cahayan territroy." she mewed stretching her tired muscles. Her yellow eyes flashed. "Cahayan......Dei...." she growled a vicious glow entering her eyes. The words peeled off her lips like nails as she spoke her younger sisters name. She had betrayed Alana long ago. Now it was time to teach her a lesson.

Lava was padding quietly down the alleyway, thinking about everything and nothing. Bored, as usual. The chocolate tabby let his thoughts wander, reflecting silently on how the wind through the roads almost sounded like voices if one had his ears open. Eyes hooded, he rounded a corner and a breeze buffeted his face. Blinking in astonishment, he swore he could actually detect a voice in the wind. But then the fresh scent of cat hit his nostrils, and he sighed in disappointment. What a surprise; cats seemed to enjoy bumping into him when he was trying to be alone. He would prefer the lost soul of a dead cat over a real one anytime. Except for Dei, of course. The young Student had gotten rather.. attatched to her. It irritated him, the way she could get under his fur like a flea and yet he was still following her around like an obedient kit.

He was so focused on his thoughts, he hadn't heard the pawsteps that hailed the approach of another cat. Looking up too late, he collided with a wall of dark fur. Lava jumped back, fur bristling in discomfort and embarrassment - and irritation. "Excuse me," he murmured, glaring at the ground. Then he twitched. The scent was familiar. Looking up, his view was met with a larger, slim she-cat who looked exactly like..

"Dei?" he mumbled in confusion, heart skipping a beat. Wait. The she-cat had a striking resemblance to his friend, except for one important fact he'd missed: this she-cat had a tail. Cheeks burning under his fur, he lowered his gaze once more and took a step back. "S-sorry," he rasped, hoping he could make a getaway soon.

Alana was lost in her thoughts. She was pulled back into her memories. Her mothers' death was the worst day of her life. Dei had blamed her and refused to speak to her. When their father died the two decided to move on from the memories of Suran and live on their own. Lana had given everything for her sister. She took are of her, sheltered her, fed her. Everything a parent was supposed to do she did for Dei. Lana had been bitter towards Dei since the day Dei betrayed her and had run back to her little Cahayan friends. She growled at the thought her soul turning bitter again. Betrayed by my own family.... she thought to herself.

She was pulled away from her thoughts when a younger cat collided with her. However, the tom was about her height but she could tell her was an apprentice.

"Dei?" she heard him whisper. Alana growled and her eyes flashed at the tom. She swept her tail around her paws. "No I'm Alana." she returned to a slightly kind gaze. One she didn't use very often "Who are you and how do you know my sister?" she asked.

Lava's gaze dropped shyly away from the she-cat's burning yellow gaze. Sister? That would explain everything. Still refusing to look up (the resemblance to Dei that Alana had was to strange for him), he let our a small mew.

"Lava. Dei's my.." he hesitated. "My.. friend." The last word was choked out of his throat, as if he didn't want to admit it to himself, let alone any random stranger cat that he crossed paths with.

Alana looked at the tom. "Is there something caught in your throat?" she asked her eyes staring at him. She saw her was still looking down "Ummm...dude my eyes are up here." she mewed pointing with her paw to where her eyes were. What is wrong with this cat? she thought to herself swishing her tail. "I'm Lana." she mewed using her preferred nickname. "Your friend?" Alana almost laughed at the word. Why would someone want to be a traitors friend?

Lava's fur prickled with fear and indignation at this strange she-cat. With difficulty, he lifted his sunset-colored eyes to meet her yellow ones and tried not to flinch. This cat might be sisters with Dei, but she was completely different. Her eyes were not soft and glowing like twin suns, like Dei's, but harsh and glinting more like a sharp reflection off a piece of metal.

"Yeah.." he grumbled, noting the almost mocking tone in Alana's mew as she repeated the title he'd assigned to Dei - friend.

Alana looked at him and began laughing. She started walking around the sitting tom. "You friends with a traitor. Man what a couple you two make." she paused a cruel smile entering her expression. Lava jumped at this, already fluffy fur standing up along his back. Dei? A traitor? Couple?!

"I-" he mewed, only to be cut off.

"The traitor and the wimp. I can totally see that!" The she-cat, whom Lava was disliking more and more, gave a harsh laugh. "The couple too scared to actually admit her feelings. Take some advice tom. Being friends with Dei will end badly. You can trust my words on that."

"Feelings? But Dei-"

"Dei is a traitor." Alana cut in. "She does whatever it'll take to survive. Even if it means leaving you for the tainted while she escapes or betraying the only family left who took care of you."

Lava shook his head, eyes wide. He backed up several steps, away from the large, now quite terrifying she-cat. He needed to think. Think! What could she mean by all these accusations about Dei? They were sisters; how could they be so different? What did she mean by "couple"? His head spun with so many confusing questions, until his mind settled on one thought. He needed to know what happened. Curiosity overpowered his shyness, and the small but muscular tom squared his shoulders and glared up at Alana. His amber eyes gleamed and he took in a shaky breath.

"What happened with you and Dei?" he asked, voice low but for once quite certain.

Lana smiled. "After our family died, Dei and i decided to leave Suran and find a life of our own." she paused and looked at him. "I gave up my life for her. I wanted to be on my own but she begged for me to stay with her....so I did." she started walking around the tom. "I took care of her, I fed her, kept her sheltered. I played the roll of a parent and I did everything for her. How does she repay me? She runs back to her little Cahayan friends leaving me to fend for myself." she growled.

"She left me alone in the wasteland where she went to live with the gang. She stayed with them and was protected and fed by them. She left me to hunt for myself. It was hard enough with the both of us and with me not being trained for something like hunting it was even harder by myself. She knew that and instead of asking if I wanted to come back with her she left. If I'd have died out there she wouldn't have known or cared. She doesn't care for others she uses them until they can't be used and then she leaves or tosses them away." she stopped and looked at Lava. "Lava. I realize that she is nice to you and yo probably won't listen to what I say, but be careful. Don't get too attached so that when the day does come when she's done with you, you don't get hurt. I may not seem like a nice cat but I don't throw others away once they look after me. She may be nice but she will never be a true friend."

Lava was silent throughout the whole story, shadowed amber eyes fixed on the ground. He slowly batted the chain around his neck as Alana told him not to trust Dei. But how could she do all this? It must've been a misunderstanding. a part of him wanted to scream. But his rational mind couldn't stop turning the idea over and over until he felt sick.

"I understand you're trying to help me," he croaked to Alana, staying perfectly still as the she-cat padded around him, making his fur spike up. "But I don't know quite what to think."

Alana shrugged to the tom. "I can only warn you. In the end it will be your decision to make. All I can say is be very careful around her." she mewed her tone and facial expression serious.

"I don't lie about things like this Lava. Believe me or don't believe me it's going to be your decision to make. But remember this...no one is who they say they are. Dei may seem sweet and nice to you but even she can have fake identities to hide her true self." Alana whispered. What she said was true. Dei had betrayed her and it had hurt Lana in a way she hadn't ever been hurt before. She hoped the tom believed her for if he didn't be careful he could get hurt the way she did. "Watch your back Lava." she mewed holding his gaze.

Lava stared back at her glinting yellow eyes, breathing low and ragged. She seems intent on proving the evil in her sister. His sunset gaze bore deep into hers, as if he was trying to get inside her mind, to see her intentions. The young tom, however intimidated he was, puffed out his broad chest and inhaled sharply.

"Why do you care?" he asked quietly. "If you dislike your sister so much, why are you taking the time to warn me, her.. friend?"

Alana shrugged. "Because she may not always be your friend." she replied her eyes staying locked on his. "Like I said before it's your choice to believe me or not but when she does end up betraying you and you ignored my advice I will be there to say 'I told you so'." she mewed standing up. "You couldn't understand what it's like to be betrayed by someone you'd do everything for. That's why I care."

Lava bent his head once more, studying his necklace with narrowed eyes. When she does end up betraying you and you ignored my advice I will be there to say "I told you so". Was that a threat or a promise? He still couldn't quite understand why this she-cat was going out of the way to warn a small, shy little tomcat who not only was friends with her sister, but might not even believe her advice.

Hooking his claws slowly through the silver loops, Lava let out a ragged sigh. The chocolate tabby loved to ponder about things, but this subject was delicate. He couldn't decide whether Alana's warning was to get revenge on Dei, or truly a lending a helping paw out to someone who in Alana's eyes, was in danger of being hurt.

In the end, he still was unsure. "Thank you," he sighed, feeling a pang in his chest for thanking this dark she-cat for insulting his friend, "I will keep your words in mind." And that was true; Lava had much to think about after this encounter.. And much to ask Dei about as well.

Alana looked at the tom for a moment, trying to see any sign of what he was thinking. However, his expression remained the same.

She smiled warmly and nodded."Your welcome." she mewed a word she almost never stated. She yawned and looked around it was now late morning and she had no idea what else to do for the rest of the day. It was boring and everything was always the same. When she had been in the out lands it was different. However, the Out lands were filled with unknown horrors some even Alana didn't wish to ponder anymore.

Lava breathed a sigh, his breath getting lost in the wind that echoed through the streets, carrying his troubled emotions off into other worlds beyond the City. Standing up, he turned slightly, distracted for a moment by the gritty, cold feeling of the pavement beneath his paws.

Kicking a pebble half-heartedly, he mewed, "I, uhn. I'd better get going, then."

Alana nodded her eyes glowing slightly "Goodby then Lava." she mewed watching as he turned to walk away. Her eyes glittered in the light of the sun ans her fur fluttered as a slight breeze blew it.
She stood up getting ready to walk away but stopped. "Oh and Lava...." she called out to him and swished her tail to the side. "....watch your back." she mewed before turning and leaping back into the darkness of the city, her tail disappearing behind a building.

Lava watched Alana leave, feeling a sudden chill run up his spine, lifting his fur. What an eerie cat, he thought, the memory of his glinting yellow eyes burning into his mind. Shaking the image out of his thoughts, he turned back towards camp. It was time to find Dei; time to discover the truth about her and her sister. Padding along the alleyway, he sighed once more as his eyes traced the rough bricks illuminated by the dusk light.

Watch your back. Huh. He didn't need to. The chocolate tabby was well aware of dangers all around him, but next to him? Never. He slunk through the shadows, feeling the presence of so many lost souls that were doomed to die in the City. He was never scared of them; rather he was comforted by them. He liked listening to their secrets, blown through his ears in the language of the wind. Everything was right before he'd met Alana, and now everything seemed flipped around. Setting his sunset colored eyes on the Cahayan camp, his mind focused on one thought.

Time to set things right again.
