Description This is the USS Lexington. It is an aircraft carrier that fought in WWII. It was known by the Japanese as the "Blue Ghost" because they sunk and destroyed it so many times but we always repaired it and sent it back to fight some more. The ship is now a museum in Corpus Christi Texas.

I slept on board back in the spring of 1996. Some other interesting facts about the Lexington:

>The engine room was one of very few in the history of the US Navy to earn the highest honors available not once, but twice.

>She was still under construction during Pearl Harbour, so they rushed her into service before she got her final coat of paint. She put to sea in primer coat, and her primer was blue.

>During WWII, she had a standard (for the time) rectangular flight deck, but the British innovation of an angled landing deck was retrofitted in the 1950's.

>It costs $20,000 to move one of the aircraft elevators up once or down once. Therefore, the elevators rarely get used... Even during combat service, aircraft were stored on the flight deck, and only transported to the hangar deck for heavy repairs.
