Description Back to the ships for a little while...... USS Yorktown (CV10) is now a museum ship at Patriot's Point, South Carolina, with the famous wartime destroyer USS Laffey astern.

This 'Yorktown' was renamed during construction from 'Bon Homme Richard' to perpetuate the memory of the more famous 'Yorktown' lost in the battle of Midway in 1942. The name 'Bon Homme Richard' eventually went to CV31.

This 'Yorktown', of the Essex class, saw her share of action after commissioning in 1943, suffering some damage and casualties as well as contributing to the attacks which finally sank the Japanese battleship 'Yamato'.

Post war she was refitted with an angled deck and served until 1970 (including Vietnam) before going into reserve prior to her preservation.

The aircraft visible on 'Yorktown's' flight deck will feature in forthcoming gallery pictures.

There is a long walkway over to the carrier, so Irv and I set off walking. However, there is a little bus that people can use who don't want to take the walk. It stopped and picked us up. Obviously the driver (a veteran of the USS Independence) thought we needed it.......

It's a real shame the RN couldn't have done this with some of our old ships.

The Yorktown was the first warship I've ever been aboard. I went there when I was about 10 and loved it. I wish I could go back.

I've been there too.  It was the first Carrier I've been aboard.  It was nice, I enjoyed it.

Best of both worlds - warships and aircraft!
