Only by crossing the very bridge that ruins the bow-on shot can you get a more-or-less unobstructed view of USS Salem, from her port quarter. 'The Sea Witch' was her nickname, reflecting the City of Salem's alleged involvement with witchcraft. The ship is said to be haunted, particularly as she was involved in relief efforts after the 1953 Ionian earthquake. Areas of the ship served as a hospital and mortuary and she has featured in ghost hunting programmes on television. However, the only people we saw were flesh and blood. I think.

Irv and I were treated like visiting Royalty on USS Salem and I would like to record here my thanks to her people for giving us such a great day. She is a truly awesome survivor and I hope she endures.
