Why take such a big pan if you can do it one image? For example a smartphone?

You wouldn't get all the scenery in from this angle, the panoramic angle of view in this image is 180 degrees x 180 degrees (you are looking left right and up and down all in one image) you wouldn't get that field of view on a smart phone, also at 100 crop the level of detail is phenomenal especially as I shoot in raw. Smartphones only capture jpg which uses compression algorithms, less image information, less colour information, and most of all less quality.

Thank you for such a detailed answer! I know perfectly well how to shoot SLR camera and shoots like a smartphone. I have both. And I know very well that such a pan. If you watched my shots, I have a lot of panoramas.
All the problem is that your very high quality shot looks like not panorama. It's more like a shot wide angle lens.
That's where my GP

A fantastic image! The colour in the arch makes it very striking. The picture uses the wide angle effects to great advantage. And a lot of attention to composition (or good fortune)! I like the way the crescent moon is exactly in the middle of two support cables and there is just a bit of space to the right of the Sage.
