Nephos: Ex-hippy, vegetarian, gay, excellent cook, loves gardening, good with children ... spent three dozen years killing horrible shapeshifting aliens with his bare hands ( he's pacifistic by nature, but the war was about species survival. ) Over a hundred and fifty years old, but these days that doesn't mean much. The mark on his face tags him as a Veteran - with a capital 'V', the term means a genetically-enhanced supersoldier. He's got a regenerative ability and can call up brief bursts of super-speed. Hasn't had to use it in decades, all the tattoo means these days is that people will often pay for his drinks.

Now we get the fun of trying to explain the family. Nephos ( biological family name Caliga, accepted by the Thalassas ) is Gilou's father. Not biological, despite having the exact same skin and eye colours - that was a bit of genetic engineering. He was married to her parent ( Partasah, the previous governor. Aquaans don't have the cultural institution of marriage but it was important to Nephos, so Partasah went along with it, ) he did most of the work raising her, he's her father. Despite the whole hermaphrodite thing, apparently Partasah was male enough for Nephos. It did, however, weird him out severely when Partasah was pregnant.

He looks fairly typical for a Tethyn city-dweller ( though was originally from a planet called Garden ) - the local fashion tends towards bodysuits with tunics, cloaks, scarves, robes, or other flowy overwear. The love of flowy is also why they go for long hair. The bodysuits provide insulation and double as the local equivalent of swimwear.
