Great metal texture on the gun. What a monster it must've seemed back then.

I've seen firing demonstrations where a Gatling gun took on an entire platoon of riflemen of the same era...the Gatling gun put out more firepower than 40 riflemen over a one minute tie period.

The idea was to reduce the number of men on the battlefield. One Gatling gun replaces a company of men. The real beauty of the design was that if a cartridge was a dud the round is just ejected without stoppage. Maxim Tye guns stopped shooting on a dud, they had to be cleared, reloaded and then they can shoot again..it only takes a few seconds to cycle and clear, but that could be enough to let someone, advance throw a grenade, or shoot the gunner.
In Vietnam my Uncle was in a position being assaulted by a company of NVA regulars, they called for air support and as my uncle put it the sky lit up, and there as this god awful growl. He laughed when he admitted he jumped up and ran a few paces before another more experienced soldier talked hm Yelling it was a gunship, a C-47 armed with several miniguns....The strike obliterated the assault force. The ones that weren't dead ran. NVA were not prone to running, they were very tough customers. They might fall back, but from what my Uncle says you hardly ever saw them break and run for their lives. "Puff," put the fear of death into them.

A monster is bad enough, but a flying monster is just a nightmare of nightmares.
