Description The security of colonies, and remote facilities is a major concern in areas without a large population or standing military force. Even when a mobile security force is available often the patrols can not adequately cover the extended boarders of large colonies, and vital facilities. To supplement the defenses, remote automated turrets are often used.  The most basic of these automated defenses are armed Sentry turrets fitted with high powered rapid fire weapons, and light anti-vehicle missiles.

Positioned at key points along a perimeter, and around vial locations these turrets provide rapid response and significant firepower to deter, or repel attacks by forces without heavy armored vehicles. rugged, and reinforced to survive long exposure to the elements and man portable weapons turrets are often inactive for lng periods, their radar, thermal and passive EM sensors sweeping large areas for unauthorized activity. The nature of the turrets, and the rigors of being exposed and infrequently maintained has led to simple, robust designs that can stay active even in the most remote areas, with little regular maintenance

The model shown( Rhictor Heavy Industries QAL-950) is typical, armed with a light rotary cannon. 25, or 30mm, and a six pack of short range, high agility, anti-vehicle/anti-air missiles. It has an internal high function expert system capable of target identification, IFF challenge/response, and limited target prioritization.  a built in sattilite data link and coordination system allows multiple turrets to cooperate, lay down converging fire, and respond without direct supervisor input if needed. Most systems have a warning siren, loud speaker, and broadband transmitter to warn approaching vehicles, and personnel of the presence of an automated turret, and advise them to halt and await identification. The QAL-950 also has a remote operations system which is also fairly standard for remote gun weapon platforms.

IN normal operation the system detects approaching objects sounds a warning, and contacts central control for fire authorization. A remote operator can then use the turrets sensors to identify a target and give a shoot/don't shoot order.if the system can not establish communications it can be set to automatically engage, fire warning shots, or ignore targets. IN areas with regular traffic most often the system is in safe mode meaning it has to be ordered to fire direcly by a controller. In other areas it may be programmed to ignore unarmed vehicles and aircraft, while engaging any target with offensive weapons.  However for obvious reasons many colonies prefer to operate in direct control mode unless hostilities are expected.

NOTES; the weapon pods, gun barrels, sensor sphere, and upper mounting are separate objects, allowing them to be posed, and switched out as wished.  at some point i may rig, and animate this...as soon as I learn how...unless someone is willing to help with that. Currently this is part of a catalog of projects I am creating for future use. I may stat this out for an RPG at some point

If anyone wants to use this for some purpose let me know I'll arrange for you to get the blender files I have for it.
