Description

The hot sun shone above Pride Rock and the heat from its rays shone down upon the entire Pridelands as the temperature started to rise. The lionesses living in Pride Rock took this opportunity to search for spots where the sun’s rays wouldn’t reach them and rested in the shade before the next hunt in the evening. Near the base of Pride Rock, three lionesses sat in the cool shade, chatting among themselves.

Sarafina sat among her two close friends, Uma and Nyuki, and half listened to their discussion about the new princesses who arrived at the Pridelands a few days ago.

From the North Lands, four princesses arrived with their parents as potential brides for the future king, Mufasa. Sarabi, Diku and Dwala were all pretty and the three friends liked each of them well enough, but Naanda…well Naanda was different for Sarafina. Ever since laying her eyes on her, Sarafina was stunned by how beautiful the North Land princess was. As the days passed with the princesses remaining in Pride Rock, the more Sarafina felt an attraction to Naanda.

Besides beautiful, she was also easy to talk to and not afraid to speak her mind, much to the annoyance of the king’s brother and to the delight of Uma. This was one of the many things Sarfina loved about Naanda. She was kind and her laugh made Sarafina’s leap. She was amazing.

And just her luck, Sarafina spotted one of them walking nearby along with…Mufasa?

The lioness felt her heart sink a bit as she watched Naanda and Mufasa walking together, talking as if they were friends…no it looked like more than just friends.

Sarafina winced as Mufasa said something which caused Naanda to laugh. Sarafina’s remained focused on the two, wishing that she was in the future king’s place.

“Hey! Pridelands to ‘fina!”

Sarafina snapped out of her thoughts at Uma’s annoyed growl. She turned to see her two friends staring at her.

“Er, what?”

“We were asking you which of the princesses Mufasa will choose as his queen.” Nyuki smiled at Sarafina.

“Oh…” Sarafina flinched at the topic. “Well…I don’t know. Maybe Diku might be good…”

“Nyuki thinks Dwala could be a great queen,” Uma smirked, “but I’m hoping Mufasa will choose Naanda. If she becomes queen, she might knock some of the arrogance out of Scar.”

She frowned at the uncomfortable look on Sarafina’s face. “What? You don’t want for Scar to be knocked down a branch or two?”

“It’s not that…”

“Then what—”

It was then both Uma and Nyuki noticed Mufasa and Naanda. Watching for a bit, Nyuki smiled.

“Well it looks like Mufasa is getting along well with Naanda.”

“Oh good!” Uma grinned. “I’m going to love to see the look on Scar’s face when Mufasa chooses her!”

“Hmm…” Sarafina’s gaze went back to Naanda. There was a brief pause of silence before Nyuki spoke.

“Sarafina? Is there something that is bothering you?”

“Are you worried that Mufasa might pick Naanda?” Uma asked. “Why? Are you in love with her or something?”

Sarafina frowned. “Well…what if I am?”

“But does she know about this?” Nyuki asked.

Sarafina paused. “Well…”

Uma sighed. “Look Sarafina, I don’t want to tear down your romantic feelings towards her…but it’s probably a bad idea to fall for a princess.”

“Uma!” Nyuki hissed.

“But it’s the truth.” Uma responded. “Naanda and her sisters are princesses from another pride. And the three of us…well, we’re just common lionesses. Not a drop of royal blood in us and only royals can marry royals while the rest of us common lionesses mate with rogues.”

“Maybe that could change.” Nyuki spoke up. “Mufasa did say there are laws that are worth changing once he becomes king in the future.”

“Probably,” Uma shrugged. “But Mufasa is not the king yet and he still needs to choose a queen. Unfortunately the law still stands. Royalty can only mate with other royalty.”

Nyuki stood up and brushed her head against Sarafina’s to comfort her. “I’m sorry Sarafina…but Uma is right.”

“I know.” Sarafina sighed. “I shouldn’t get my hopes up too much…”

A wave of guilt fell over Uma at her friend’s sadness. “Well…it’s what Nyuki said. Maybe he might go with another one of Naanda’s sisters and then we can talk with him about changing the law.”

Sarafina’s gaze went over to Naanda and her heart sank lower as she watched Naanda and Mufasa return to the royal sleeping caves, still talking and laughing.

“Well…maybe…”
