Description This was done as a comission for a friend, but even if he hadn't requested it, I always wanted to do a picture of Elliott Smith. Every once in a while, people accuse me of only being able to draw pretty people. The truth is, I enjoy drawing nice looking people. If I'm going to spend 20+ hours on a drawing, I like it to be of someone I enjoy looking at. that does not mean that I am unable to draw unattractive people. Here is an example, even though Elliott Smith has always been one of my favourite singers, I never found him to be the least bit attractive.

Anyway, even though he had always been a really depressed man, it was still a shock to me when he killed himself earlier this year. Of course thats the moment when I told myself, "Man, I really should have drawn him before." Many people thought the same way, because that month I was lucky enough to see many beautiful drawings of Elliott. I held off on doing one myself until this comission.

It was a fun drawing to do, a beautiful photo reference as used. I drew it on rough paper, so the scan really enhanced the grainy-ness (its not noticable in person). And thats that.

I think he killed himself, sadly. This isn't a Kurt Cobain story.
"Oh man, what a plan, suicide."

Anyways...excellent, but for some reason his face looks more like a morphing of Elliott and Brandon Boyd to me.

I love the fact that there's no background, just a bench. You can look at anything and see the detail.

Wow. You did really well sketching a portrait of Elliott.

I do not believe he killed himself, though. I've done some research, and it just seems all to likely that his girlfriend killed him. That's just me, though.

What a beautiful drawing and a wonderful tribute! This is just gorgeous. I love the pencil work and the textures. The details are amazing like his hat and shirt and the bench. Excellent work as always!!

I like it very much. Beauty is, after all, in the eye of the beholder yes?
Say, by the by, my friend here is telling me that this artist was killed, rather than commiting suicide. I don't know if that is true or not...

Thanks, that was the hardest part! I'm not all that experienced with details in such a small area, it was a real challenge.

yeah, small features are hard to get all the detail in, you did an amazing job of it

Generally well done. Good perspective, right shading (especially on clothes, what makes them very realistic). I just find some contours marked too strongly. Also the vision of hair could be more detailed. Anyway, I like this work because of the point of view.

Regards.

Thanks for the comment! This drawing was difficult at some points because it was hard for me to add detail since he is kind of far away and small, its not as easy for me as a close up portrait. But I tried!

I love your picture of Elliott. Before I drew this one, I searched DA for other drawings of his, and yours was definitely the best I had seen. He's a tough subject!

Excellent job on this. The wrinkles in his shirt are, in particular, amazing. As is the way you showed the grain in the wood and the expression on his face.

Artists should always feel free to draw what they enjoy the most. I enjoy drawing pretty people, theres nothing wrong with that! I just feel bad because sometimes people judge my abilities by the subject I chose, and thats not really fair.

Thanks for the comment!

Wow, this is quite emotional after I read the comment. At first when I looked at it, I thought it was just pretty good (well, of course its' VERY good but it doesn't extraordinarily stick out of your usual style) but for some reason I got a melancholy mood from it. After reading the comment, I looked at it again and it seemed to change a bit lol.

You also really had his personality down on his face. It may be the perspective, the expression or I don't know, but the mood was really well done. Great job!

weezie In reply to geoffo [2004-09-04 04:20:59 +0000 UTC]

Its cool that it had that effect on you. Many of my friends, as well as myself, had always been big fans of Elliott, and it was a really sad time when he died. I think its impossible for people to even look at a photograph of him without getting that sense of melancholy.
