"Chantel" is a portrait (plus wings!) of my good friend Chantel, who is undergoing chemo (and who just graduated on Thursday! Congrats to her!). For the background, I painted from a photograph that I took a few years ago in Utah. Aspen trees have always been one of my favorite kinds of trees, but I'd never tried to paint them before. I fear it was not the best choice, because they are fairly monochromatic. After I finished the picture, an artist friend commented that the fairy was too bright against an almost monochromatic background.I went back in and lightly glazed the shadows with a warm brown, and added green "moss" (or something), and a brighter blue sky.

With all due respect, and speaking only as an action man and not as an artist (although I do know a bit about faeries 
This is a beautiful image, and not least of all precisely becasue of the strong contrast between the background and the subject. I will readily admit that I am a sucker for aspens, but that has no bearing on the skill with which you have rendered these particualr ones. The little details such as the vines entwining her arms and the lovely roots that contrast so well with the straightness of the trunks combine to make this a very complex, beautiful and exciting piece.

I think that the monochromatic background fits perfectly, almost as if the fairy is a glimmer of hope in an all-same world. It sort of gives a sense of peace, kind of a backwords affect of 'every rose has thorns' feel.

Thanks! I didn't do that on purpose, but I sure like the way it sounds! Particularly since the painting was made to help cheer up my good friend, during a very low time in her life.
It also fits her personality. We live in a desert, surrounded by people very different from ourselves. She really is a bright--albiet Gothic--light in this very dull, colorless place.

Your a wonderfully sweet girl making this for your friend, it is a very beautiful painting, I truely enjoyed coming across it, sheer beauty. I personally think the brightness of the faerie and the monochromatic background gives the faerie a otehrwordly look. But that is just me I am nothing more than a poet. ciao m'dear.

I think that she is the focus of the piece, therefore she should stand out. However, I like the different color variance toward the trunks.
