I love this work because it is so similar toThe Dragonriders of Pern series byAnne McCaffrey. Now that I've discovered I've forgotten them, I'll have to get them out and read them all over again. Thank you for inspiring me to do so!

I love the character in the foreground...I love all the details on her hair and the folds on her dress, and I love the sense of motion there, with the wind blowing against her and pushing her hair, outfit and the banner back. I thought that sense of motion looked really great on her, though you can't see how the wind blows as well in the background. But I love the soft but bold colors you paint with and all of the details both in the linework and the colors. : )

Wow! Stunningly gorgeous, as always. However, a few suggestions:
- Compositionally, the foreground figure should jump out more. As it is, with her wearing blue and the background being largely purple and grey, she gets a little bit lost in the composition. A simple fix would be a blurred white nimbus around her, a heavy black line, or a wash, "aerial perspective" on the background elements to make them less bold.
- Alternately, making her gown a bright red would really make her stand out.
I think your watercolors are fantastic and that you could be doing book covers and other professional work (forgive my ignorance, as I'm not certain if you're a fan or a pro at this point).

Yeah, the background and foreground are really competing. Originally, I had a pink sunset sky, but her face didn't show up at all, so I covered up the pink with purple and put in the black cloud. The dragons really need to be re-done, the color is too intense and there isn't enough detail in some and too much in others. But I'm so sick of this painting, I can't bear to look at it.
As for being a professional artist... I suppose I am. From 1994 till about 2002 I worked full time as an artist for various video game companies, solely supporting my family with my art. Now, I am trying to balance being an artist and homeschooling an autistic child, so I can no longer do any work that has a deadline. As for publication, I tried to get book and magazine gigs for about two years after college, and decided it was way too competitive.
