Description
Following the successful Iwai Rebellion against the court in Yamato, Tsukushi-no-Kimi Iwai consolidated what is now the island of Kyushu. The Kumaso and Hayate peoples in So province were subjugated, and envoys were sent to the Kingdoms of the Korean Peninsula and to the Sui dynasty. By the year 600 AD, Iwai’s son Tsukushi-no-Kimi Kuzuko was firmly in power as the hegemon of Kyushu.
In the early days of the Tsukushi dynasty, the nation was divided into four provinces (kuni) and two regions controlled by local families (Tsushima island and Iki island). The four provinces are Tsukushi, Hi, Toyo, and So, with the capital of Tsukushi-no-Miyako placed in the Tsukushi plain of southern Tsukushi province.
