I think to develop an art style that is, well, how to say, looks like your calling card, you need to train how to draw things in realistic style. So you'll understand how things that you draw stylized work.
Like, I tried to learn at first how to draw real horse (though now i draw them more like they're some kind of a dog or a lion with a horse-like head)
