Description Whatever other humans were like, you weren’t like them. You knew that. You could do something none of them could do; you harnessed power no human should hold.

For you could weave the world itself.

You remember little of your earlier childhood years, but if there was one thing you were able to recall it was your mother. She was an exotic creature; she possessed a unique beauty that belonged to no human, a voice that echoed itself, and power that was out of reach of mere mortals. If the humans residing in the Walls ever knew such creatures existed, they would surely wreak havoc out of fear of the unknown.

You didn’t know what manner of creature your mother was, all you knew was that her species far surpassed your own, and that they were a rare race even among the universe’s spectrum. You had her traits. Not all of them, of course, if you did then it would be obvious to anyone with eyes to see or ears to hear that you were not human, nor were you mortal.

Your appearance, though not as attractive as your mother’s, had still been a rare anomaly that often caught the attention of men and women alike. Your voice, though not as soothing or intimidating as your mother’s, still could build a man to his strongest or crush him into dust. Your power, though not as strong as your mother’s, could bring an entire nation to its knees.

What were you? You didn’t know. You didn’t even know the full extent of your inherited power.

Your mother had taught you an ancient magic that she referred to as Dokul Ark, and you showed great promise for your young age.

But the last memory you ever had of your only parent was her informing you of her departure. You didn’t want her to leave, and she didn’t want to leave either, but she told you of her duties to someone who was strong enough to do a lot of harm to her. You couldn’t believe that there was someone more powerful than your mother, but there was, and the manner of being that your mother had been was dedicated to this entity.

So she left you, put you into an orphanage and continued to fulfil her duties to this “Goddess of the Underworld”, and you were left confused and afraid for what was to come.

When you had been adopted at age ten, your foster parents could only handle you for little over a month before they disowned you. They called you a cursed child, claimed that you were a witch, or a devil. Either way, no one believed their words and brushed them off as simply crazy. But they weren’t crazy. They only saw too much.

Over the years you learned to harness your magic, continuing to train yourself in Dokul Ark with the tomes your mother left in your possession. Most of the spells had been aggressive, violent, only used to inflict damage upon others whether it be mental or physical. It didn’t surprise you, by the way your mother had described the magic you knew it’d be little else than a bloody mean to an end.

But now you were twenty-five and currently in a relationship with Humanity’s Strongest Soldier himself. He knew of your supernatural nature – he was the one who had discovered you casting spells and performing rituals in the outskirts of the forest. He’d always try and get you to join the Legion, tell you that your magic could prove invaluable to the fight against the Titans, but you’d always refuse.

You didn’t want your true nature to be known to the public; just having Levi know was bad enough. This decision caused a lot of tension between the two of you. Levi would claim that you were selfish; putting your own reputation above the needs of humanity, and a time or two you’d have long tiresome arguments over it.

In actuality you were just frightened. You could delve into the depths of the darkest magics, perform the most satanic of rituals, but that was because you knew how. Humanity’s knowledge on the Titans is very limited – and you feared the unknown. You feared death.

But recently on an expedition Levi had come back to you blind, and your fear for the Titans had only increased.

You cried that night; you mourned the loss of his sight and blamed yourself for it. Perhaps if you had stood your ground and finally acted on what he had suggested time and time again he’d still be able to see. You could’ve healed him before the damage had been done – but it was gone now, and it wasn’t coming back.

…Not by any natural means, anyhow.

You’d spent the past month researching rituals to give him his eyesight back. Everything you came across seemed to require the sacrifice of a goat – and god knows how much you didn’t want to do that. Sacrificing a human was fine, but a goat? You’d never stoop down to that level. That poor goat probably didn’t do a damn thing wrong its entire life.

The house you shared with Levi was dimly lit and silent. The only sound you could hear – if it could even be counted as audible – was the quiet flickering of the flames belonging to the candle set on the table.

The hour was lost on you; your mind was too focused on the book set before you to keep track of the time. It must’ve been late though, because you heard Levi making his way out of the bedroom and though the house searching for you. You never came to bed, and despite the fact that Levi would never admit this; he’d been sleeping with you for so long that now he struggled without you. You were a soothing presence, and you always seemed to help him with his bouts of insomnia.

“Levi, what are you doing up?” you asked, turning back to see him with his hands flat on the wall to give him guidance.

“What do you think, idiot? Why isn’t your ass in bed?”

“I’m… researching,” you answered.

“Researching? You’re not looking into some freaky magic shit, are you?” Your silence served as an adequate answer. “[First], what the hell are you up to?”

You sighed deeply and turned from him. “It’s nothing, just… go back to bed; I’ll be there in a minute.”

“I’m not going unless you’re coming with me.”

“Levi, this is important! I can’t go to sleep now, I’m so close!”

“What the fuck are you trying to do?!” he demanded. “What is it that’s so damn important that you’ve been neglecting me these past few days, huh?”

Deciding to tell him your intentions, you heaved a great sigh before admitting, “Your eyesight, I’m… I’m trying to get it back.”

“My eyesight? There’s a way? Do you know how?” You seemed to have piqued his interest by letting him in to your little… pet project. And while you did have a way, you were almost certain that he wasn’t going to like it.

“Well… yes. But you have to understand in situations like this you can’t just ask something for nothing. To get your eyesight back I’m uh, I’m going to need to take away someone else’s.”

Levi didn’t know how to properly react to the news you were giving him. In order for him to get his sight back, someone else has to be blinded? Was it worth it?

He never truly understood the vast complexities of magic; the notion that something could be manipulated like a goddess with a brush was just beyond his comprehension. But the idea that his eyesight could be returned at the expense of another’s – he didn’t know what to think of it at all. Should he rejoice? Should he cower in fear? What else is there that could be traded with a substitute?

He dreads to think.

Even though re-establishing his sight would benefit humanity by allowing him to continue his service in the Scouting Legion, a human would be harmed by it. Was that what he wanted? It was against everything he was fighting for. He went through all this to protect humans, not injure them. Would he be able to live with it, knowing that someone else sacrificed their sight for him? Not being able to see weighed down on him heavily; he didn’t want anyone else to go through this.

He shook his head slowly. “No. That’s not an option, [First]. I won’t do it. Let’s just forget this and go to bed, okay?”

Your heart sank at his words. Why didn’t he want to go through with it? Didn’t he want to see again? “But Levi, you can--”

“I said no. I’d rather stay blind than force someone to give up their vision. Besides, wouldn’t it seem suspicious that I suddenly regained it?”

“…I guess,” you sighed.

“Mmh. Now are you coming to bed or not?”

You stood up from your seat and walked over to Levi, brushing your hand over his to show him where you were. You then proceeded to guide him to your shared bedroom and usher him into the bed, before sliding in beside him.

Levi wrapped his arms around your figure and held you close to him, drifting off into peaceful slumber only minutes after. You couldn’t sleep though; guilt wracked your body, your mind, and your soul. You had the power to return his vision to him, but he refused it; why? Was this his way of getting back at you for not joining the Legion? What was he trying to accomplish by willingly remaining blind? You couldn’t, for the life of you, figure it out. This was going to eat you alive though, you just knew it. You wanted him to see again, you wanted the colour to return to his eyes, rather than the milky white sheet that now covered them.

Levi would probably hate you for this, but you couldn’t just sit by and watch him go through life without the vital sense he once had. You had to go through with it, but you needed a sacrifice before you could.

And then it hit you.

The following morning, Levi roused from his sleep, an odd and foreign feeling rushing through his veins. What was that feeling? He couldn’t describe it – it almost felt as if his blood had solidified into pins and needles and then poked and prodded his insides. It wasn’t necessarily painful; it was just an abnormal sensation to have.

He groaned a bit. He wasn’t able to feel your warmth beside him anymore. Where did you go?

He opened his eyes, expecting to be greeted with the same darkness he did his damnedest to accustom to, but instead he saw the world around him. It looked so alien now, as if he hadn’t seen it in years.

Knowing this was your doing, he immediately called out your name. “[First]!”

No response.

He tried again, “[First], come here now!”

Still nothing.

“Damn, where the fuck is that idiot?” Emitting another lowly groan, he pushed himself out of bed and walked through the house barefooted in search of you.

Everything felt so different now. His new vision had been far more perceptive than his original eyes – whoever acted as his sacrifice must’ve had damn perfect eyesight. He couldn’t help but feel guilty though, the thought that someone was going to be waking up with the same blackness he’d been greeting the past few weeks was a thought process he didn’t want to have. Damn you, why couldn’t you have just listened to him for once? He didn’t want this, why would you force it on him? On them?

Minutes later, he found you in the kitchen with your back faced to him. You had been leaning over the sink with your head tilted downwards. Levi felt a small wave of relief wash over him. For a minute there he thought you’d left.

But you must’ve heard him coming, because only seconds later you turned around to meet him face-to-face, and what Levi saw left him feeling as if someone had driven a sword through his middle. You were the sacrifice.

“[First]…” he began. “What have you done?”

Knowing me, I'd probably kill someone to get MY eyesight back or just do some magic on myself to get it back...not being able to draw for the rest of my life is scary. (UNLESS I LEARN HOW TO DRAW WHILE I'M BLIND WHICH WOULD BE GREAt)
