Description     This is actually closer to how I imagine Deinonychus to be, except, the neck feathers would still be a bit thicker.
Scott Hartman's skeletal was used as a reference for this.
    Please enjoy!

Excellent design. I always felt the neck should be thicker and the snout more exposed, though, lie in eagles. But tha is mere speculation, great drawing!

Thank you for the comment.
Yes, the neck probably should be thicker.  Though, I keep changing my view on how the snouts should be.  Maybe one day I will settle.

I personally take reference from Eagle snouts and Microraptor. Judging from Zhenyuangyulong (I don't think I spelled that right), I'd guess you could go with an eagle. Likely had a more exposed snout on the sides to lose heat in a desert environment.

That makes sense.  Being able to lose heat is important, especially in a desert.  But, what if the extra bit of insulation actually protected the snout from heat?  And the covering protected the skin from the wrath of the sun?
You were pretty close with the name, though it is a bit shorter: Zhenyuanlong.

I guess you're right on that....dinosaur feathering is pretty tricky business! Actually, if I don't know the covering, I go default and cover them entirely!

I guess you could insulate with scales, but I couldn't see that on a stem-bird.

Really?  Thank you.
Oh gosh, you are very right about it being tricky.  Sometimes, there are just too many factors involved.  But then again, that leaves for more possibilities and good challenges to take.

Going all out feather is not too bad of a default to use.

But what if scales were what originally covered snouts and then beak-keratin later overtook that when the snout became a beak?  (Sorry, if this is a silly question.)

No idea.

speaking of that, what do you think of Dinoworld? Got any candidates?

(Sorry for replying so late; this got lost in a pile of unchecked messages.)  Hmm... I do not know much of Dinoworld.

Nice! I do like the details in this sketch, and you certainly illustrated this species in a plausible way.

This is very much how I'd like to see a dinosaur film portray it's 'raptors'. A perfect balance of bird and classic scaly dromaeosaur that is conventionally intimidating. Brilliant work.

Thank you very much.  Yes, that would be fantastic to see in films.  I would watch them many times.  Perhaps it will happen soon?

We can dream!

(That Dinosaur Island movie last year had feathered dromaeosaurs, but they weren't perfect. Still, a good start!)

Indeed.

Yes, you are right, that movie was a very good start.   Sadly, I never actually watched it, I just saw trailers and photos, which looked nice.  Did you find it good?
