Description I just wanted to draw a bunch of flowing hair and this is what happened. I was listening to Hammock's Oblivion Hymns album while drawing this. Took me around 2 1/2 hours total, though I only had a little time to work on it each night so it was dragged out for a week. Also, I made this with a limited 5-color palette; #10 from this list if anyone was curious.

Ooh, that shading! Adds so much volume! And speaking of volume, that's some lovely hair.

Thanks, this really was a fun piece to work on! When you only have 5 colors to work with and one of them is in the background, you have to find workarounds to the shading. I'm glad you thought it has enough volume! ^__^

I've been wanting to make a companion piece of some kind because I need an excuse to make a speedpaint video about drawing flowing hair.

It's really cool to see the kind of results you can get when you set limitations for what you can do with a piece.

Ooh, I would love to see that video if you do it/have done it!

I actually was able to do a video about it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cSuMd… It's for this picture:

Again, another pretty flowy haired portrait against black. Seems you've really found your niche with these drawings.

I also think it's cool that you limited yourself to those five colors. Putting limitations on yourself is a great way to become a better artist when you're in a kind of medium that generally has no limitations. Great work here Raine.

Thanks! I feel the same way about limitations; it forces you to think differently or take a new approach. Speaking of which, I've done a few like this with the colors against black and I'm at the point where I feel like branching out. Maybe I'll try to focus more on the shading rather than lines in a future portrait.

Sure if that works for you. I'm not a drawing 2d style artist so I don't know what would be better for you to explore. I know Composition matters a lot so maybe work on that to? IDK I'm just trying to sound like I know what I'm talking about.

I've been listening to Hammock on a regular basis while drawing for a while; you've definitely captured something that reminds me of their music here. Love the ethereal look, like an image in fire or a spirit among stars. Beautiful either way.

Hammock is great! I always listen to them when I need to chill. There was definitely some influence from their sound in this piece, though I'm not sure how and I can't quite put my finger on it. The closest thing I can think of is "floating" but that's rather abstract. @___@ Thank you for your feedback, and I'm glad you enjoyed this.

Thank you! I'm not sure how, but the hair always appears as if by magic when I draw it. I think it just has to do with knowing the texture of the hair and where the hair line is and then letting it flow away with the level of gravity that you want. I created a sense of depth by weighting the lines thicker where the light hits, and highlighting certain parts while leaving the rest in shadow. I don't really have any other secrets, so I hope that helps.

Thanks! I've really been enjoying drawing portraits using these 5-color palettes. It's a challenging but fun exercise, and using nonstandard colors helps break me out of my standard habits. I'll take any excuse to draw hair, tbh
