N'awww so adorable! Even though she's just a beanie it still looks like a lot of work though! Maybe that's my hatred of clothing talking I like what you did with her hair btw, looks really cool! Originally I was wondering how to get that shading on her hair but just gave it up as too much effort, but like this one could maybe even add a bit of airbrushing to blend the lighter with the darker colour further.. I'm not sure what paint could be used that wouldn't gunk up the fiber though. Hmmm.. you're making me brainstorm.

I'm actually going to try something to get the shading on a full sized rarity. Too much work for a beanie! If it works I'll let you know how I did it

I'm trying a little test run of it right now, but I'm not sure it's going to work. I think the method I'm trying might not be completely color fast and I don't want to risk purple rubbing off on rarity's white coat. We'll see though!

Ooh yeah right, that would be unsightly. I've used acrylic ink made for airbrushes to paint velboa in the past and it worked pretty good, but you wouldn't want to risk getting the fabric wet, nor use too much or it gets clumpy. Too bad minky can't be bleached or dyed :\ (unless you've found a way?) I guess one could use some of that bamboo fabric for the mane instead and dye it to get the effect. I was also thinking of that 'tie dyed' minky rare places sell, but couldn't find any purple.. too bad. I wonder if there's some other comparable natural fiber out there that could be substituted and dyed to fit...

this would be no problem for mohair! I've been thinking of making up a special pony for myself with it, mohair is so amazing (and expensive.. but I've got lots leftover anyway). It would look really different from a minky pony though. anyway /rambling. Good luck with it!!

The method I'm testing uses fabric markers, but even after heat setting it I'm seeing a little purple rub off the fibers when I rub it with a white paper towel. Maybe I should try heat setting it with a long run in the dryer instead of with the iron. We'll see, I'll keep trying some stuff on scraps!

I haven't tried dying it yet, though I've been thinking of trying with some of the dyes that are made for synthetic fabrics. But since I'd want to do a dip dye to get a gradient I'm still not sure how well it would work as the one I was looking at requires boiling the fabric for an hour. I guess I could try actually tie dying it though and see how that looks.

I always stuck my pieces out on the deck in the summer to heat set because it was like a blinding inferno out there lol, but I'm not sure if it actually helped or not. These polyester fibers are pretty tough to do any color work with.

Yeah I looked it up last night and it seems you'd have to use disperse dye to maybe accomplish it ([link] ), and it looks tough and messy (and toxic), I'm not sure it's worth it to me. And dip dying would be difficult, as you said.

Yeah I think I'll probably just end up sticking to the two fabric colors but no gradient attempt. It's a nice idea, but unless I can find a natural fiber fabric that has the same sort of texture as minky I don't think it would be worth the hassle.

Aww, darn hey :\ I really wish they made tye dye in darker purple, all I can find is light shades. I might order some bamboo to see how it is though.

If you do get that bamboo stuff I'll be really curious to see a little review of it. If it seems like it would work nicely in combination with minky then that would be awesome!

Do you have the link to it? I thought I bookmarked it, but I can't find it now.
