Well, my first submission in quite a long time. There is actually a long story behind this one, if you'll bear with me.

I was inspired to do this deviation after viewing this awesome pencil drawing by ValRaven entitled Asian Spellcaster. Check it out here: [link] It's been in my favourites folder for quite some time now and of all of pieces in that folder, it think this is my most favoured.

To compliment it, I decided to work on an Asian Swordsman in January of 2007. Stereotypical, I know, but nonetheless it started shaping out. My original piece, which was nearly completed in that same month, was actually in color, like most of my other recent pieces.

I was thrown in a loop, however, when my file somehow got corrupted. Some layers were merged. Some layers were completely missing. Then the color was thrown all out of whack. He looked like a wimpy version of the Hulk, as his skin tone went from a nice golden-tan to green. Needless to say, I was pretty upset...and I don't even draw that often anymore, as it's just a hobby. I abandoned it and it sat in my computer collecting digital dust.

This past weekend, I was cleaning out some files when I stumbled upon this file again. I finally just decided just to redraw the missing layers and grayscale the entire picture. I put a blue overlay on top to give it a least some color, although somehow it looked as if the original skin tone was there all along with the overlay.

I might add a necklace or few other things later on, but for now. I'm pretty satisfied on how it came out even though it was not my original intent.

The belt, incase you are wondering, are leather pieces entwinded with metal "calligraphy scrolls." The kanji depicted are 3 of the 7 Bushido codes. Gi - morality; Yu - courage; and Meiyo - defending your honor, even until death. The other four would have been wrapped around the otherside of his waist.

I hope I do ValRaven's Spellcaster some justice with my turnaround piece.
