Description clayton mine is the only mine left in the UK to use dual gauge rail transport. The standard gauge hauls chalk to the big tipper, whilst the narrow gauge takes care of the clay. The roadbed where the clay is too soft for normal gauges. The narrow cope easily with the sharp turns and highly uneven track.

Unfortunately for truckers they haven't anywhere near as much economic flexibility and variable equipment such as this. To add to that, the distance between the wheels on trucks are not as differential as standard and narrow gauge railways. Who says one size fits all?
