Description Please look closely before you think she's just having a bad hair day.

So this is for the [link] Contest "Flowers" When I first started this, the main idea was that her hair would look like the suns flower (which looks like a lily e.i. Lilly petals) and than have flowers from her birthday braid scattered out of her hand over her skirt. Okay, so that's still what it mainly is, but I looked at a screencap to get better detailing of the petals and realized that the center emanates purple into pink into gold! So, I leafed out the hem of her dress to create her as kind of the 'center' of the flower. I really liked how it turned out, not gonna lie.
I still suck at detail, but mainly I need to have/take more time and have more patience - especially the latter.

EDIT: Okay, so here's a link to the re-upload of this pic taken with a different camera. [link] It looks aweful to me from my phone, but computers have different resolutions!! I'm hoping maybe its a bit clearer.

EDIT 2 Here's a link to the companion picture [link]

Impact

This is truly a beautiful contribution to #DisneyPrincessArt 's contest. I really admire the thought put into your work and how you added the motif of the flower and added her in the center of both the image and the flower. It is a very creative addition and it's a very lovely idea indeed.
Vision
I gave you three and a half stars for vision, mostly because the piece is a little blurry. Because of how blurry it is, it really is a little hard to make out all the details you have added (although if I look very very closely I can see that they are present). One suggestion is to make it clear enough so that the viewer doesn't need to squint or zoom in. I don't know if you scanned the piece or took a picture of it, but I'd work on making a clearer picture. But besides that, the vision and the way you portrayed Rapunzel worked out marvelously.
Originality
You got five stars for originality! I have never before seen this done before, so it is indeed very much original to you. Again, I will say that I love how you incorporated the golden flower motif and added it to her hair, which essentially parallels to the plot line in the movie.
Technique
For technique, I gave you four stars. This is because when I look at your coloring in some places it is a little choppy. But that could correspond with what medium you're using, be it pastels or colored pencils. (What medium are you using, by the way? It looks slightly like chalk pastels, but the blurry-ness could be tricking my eyes)
Her anatomy seems to be correct in most places, so you've done well in that area.
The details in the flower are very nice and the small flowers on her dress are a very nice addition.
Impact
Five stars; all in all it is a wonderful piece and I can tell you've put a lot of hard work, time, and thought into this creation.
I wish you all the best of luck in the contest!

Thanks SO much! Yeah, with the blurry I took a picture, I need to find a better way to upload - sorry about that :/
The coloring is choppy, I'm overnighting at work and don't have my blending stumps. I'm also sometimes just really bad and/or lazy with color. The piece was done in chalk pastels and I tried a little bit of oil pastel in her hair with the scrolling.
Again, thank you very much! It's so good to have feedback, and this was very informative!

You're very welcome!
I thought it was pastels! In that case, I totally understand how hard it is to color smoothly with them (I've tried in art class and failed many times!)
And oil pastels too? That's really creative!

It's a pleasure C:
I hope you have a lovely weekend :]

They can be hard to blend - but better than colored pencil I love working with them, they're my favorite color medium.

Thanks Same to you

I can't, for the life of me, use any kind of pastel hahah
I guess I'm just a colored pencil & marker girl C:

Oh really? Wow! See, I'm trying to figure out colored pencils and I'm just starting to play with markers - I just think they're so hard!!! So I'm a little jealous of people smart enough to use them I'm used to how easily you can manipulate and smooth graphite, which is how I fell in love with chalk as a viable media for myself You just can't put ma y layers down with chalk - that's the hardest part for me.

Hah I ruined one of my art projects in school by trying out chalk pastels!! I don't think I could ever get myself to try those again
Actually, colored pencils aren't too hard to blend. I ahve a prismacolor clear blender (it's mainly just wax) and it blends each color like magic.
Markers aren't too bad, but I guess it depends on the kind you use.
I use Prismacolors because they blend so easy and their color selection is lovely.

Oh no! That must have been aweful! I can see why you wouldn't want to use them. Me, I freak out before I color almost any sketch that I love - so I've started doing those sketches VERY loosely
Hmm. I've seen blenders in craft stores - it's just all so expensive!! I hate spending money on things that I don't know that I'll use, you know? Ah well, I'm sure eventually I'll end up buying and trying the technique intrigues me. Like water colors. Yow! I cant seem to wrap my head around those for some reason.

My apologies for the late reply, I have been quite busy with my other's birthday gift and other things
Yes, I freak out too! I always scare myself into thinking that I'll ruin the sketch if I color it.
Yes, watercolors are very interesting (and hard to use, in my opinion) I always have a lot of trouble mixing colors, adding too much or too little water...

Thanks so much ^_^ it's the first contest I've ever placed in, so I'm pretty excited Thank you so much for your input on the piece, that was awesome! (I uploaded a slightly more updated version with a picture taken by a real camera since my paper is too big to scan You may be able to see the details better. The link is on the original ) thanks again

You're very welcome!! That's awesome that you won one of the top three places in your very first contest!

I'll have to go take a look at it sometime C: Hopefully my load of schoolwork will die down a little so I can find more time I'm mostly online to quickly answer comments and then I have to get back to studying, oh my!

I hope you have a great weekend!

Yup. It's kind of supposed to be both - or all three - in a way. Her, the sun, and the flower.

I just love this but I am having a hard time at this point seeing it as clearly. Did you scan it in? Or did you shoot with the camera? I'm the one running the contest, I love the idea here. But I was hoping it would be easier to see it. I again love it, so I hope if you did a camera shot you might instead have a scanner or know someone who does. I know places like Office Depot will scan for you. It costs a little but just saying.

I own an Epson love the scanner....great concept and this is what I was talking about when I started this. I am so tempted to join myself and have a vote done on my own personal account for the contest winners. I dunno though I'll have to think about it.

Again love the layout and how you pulled it off, I think its cool, and I just hope you can give us a clearer copy.

I did shoot it with a camera - but if I scan it I don't think I can edit the deviation to put it in, since this one is already entered. I'll see what I can do. If I can, do you want me to add a link to the original picture? I'm pretty much on deviantArt by phone only - which is a pain - so I don't own a scanner, but I'll look into using one. (Another reason is I've never had luck with pencil sketches in a scanner - most of my work is graphite.) the only other issue would be that the page size is 11x17 :/ Do you know if Office Depot has larger scanners?

Phoenix-Dream-Angel In reply to Whytegriffin [2013-06-01 23:11:05 +0000 UTC]

They have HUGE ones that's why I recommend them. I know that I was going to have them work on some for me but then something came up. But I do recall the sizes and they are HUGE! LOL

And yes you can you just scan and then hit edit on deviantart and put in the scanned image. IF you do go for a scanner as in buy one I HIGHLY recommend Epson Perfections, I have used them since I was 17 and they have special software that makes it so you can edit before you even scan in.

You simply 'preview' the image after putting it in the scanner and the you adjust things from there and it helps trust me. And if you do it thru office depot and you send me the image I can fix it to looking as clear as possible for you. I wouldn't alter it any other way of course.

Okay, I may have to look into that thank you Also, it will help me to look at an image on a computer screen, because smaller screens can show more detail. I was really disappointed to see one of my favorite pictures (a different one then this) did NOT show up well at all on my sister's computer when it shows so well on my phone

Okay! I will do my best. I'm going to fix a couple more than this one now that I know

Cool. I don't know that I'm up to needing/wanting a scanner/printer yet because my laptop right now is strictly non Internet (miss paranoid writer speaking here.) But its good to know for the future!!!
Thanks so much for the offer I do think I'll try it out on my own, see how it looks and all - I have a brother with lots of awesome software that I don't know how to use, so I might be able to just have him do it I'll see and let you know!!! Thanks again!
