Description Hugh Dancy as Will Graham from NBC's new great TV show Hannibal.

"I feel like I'm fading."

Well, what can I say, I fell in love with this ref even before starting to watch the show and, since I’ve always had a soft spot for Dancy <3, I waited to marathon it and LOVE it to have an "excuse" to start drawing him in character.

The continuing issues with low res. reference pictures. I like your take on it anyhow. The textures are interesting even if they aren't your favourite.
I sometimes enjoy playing with out of focus images but I totally understand the frustration with it too. This is lovely.

Thank you very much! Now, after some time has passed, I quite like this drawing if I don't focus too much on the flaws. I don't really "recognize" it as my own due to its look, the style, but the unfamiliar look is a result of ref used. Somehow I achieved an interesting effect, atmosphere of the whole piece. Not nearly as detailed as usual yet it has that something. Wow, did I just say something positive about my work for a change?

Anyway! I like/don't mind blurry vs sharp images and drawing that, but not drawing blurry images that are result of poor quality.

I've just read your description and I must rest a while...

OK, so first of all, don't you dare saying it's not impressive, because IT IS Especially taking into account the fact, you haven't done graphite pencil larger than ACEO since some longer time.

Secondly, I don't watch Hannibal, but judging by what I see at Tumblr, Will is a lost person, a tortured soul. And your drawing depicts it perfectly. I think that if there had been used other style and technique [I dunno, vivid colours/minimalistic style/no black but everything in pale greys], the atmoshere wouldn't be captured. You caught his absent look very well.
Love the differences in textures, the jacket on which he put his head on is particularly excellent. Fantastic work on skin texture and the hair. I'm amazed by the result, I'm glad you managed to finish the drawing!

Last but not least: "My inner half-perfectionist won't stop whining through the whole process because of great lack of detail, textures, clarity" - as if I heard myself I also hate pictures with suspicious areas [you put it in words nicely!], I often try to avoid them, but when I pick such photos, they give me a headache.

WickedIllusionArt In reply to Ilojleen [2013-08-30 14:51:47 +0000 UTC]

Well, maybe it's time to start watching another serial killer show, there's only a few Dexter episodes left. (I was mentioning how I must do another Dexter fanart but since the air date moved to sooner I don't see that happening due all other art projects, later will be too late) Hannibal is really great show and has fantastic visuals and style and the plot doesn't really revolve around him, you don't follow Hannibal around, and you don't actually see him kill anyone, for now. And the cast is really great. Mads is fantastic as H, Dancy adorable as always, Fishburne, Anderson, etc.

Thank you very much! The atmosphere is the only thing I really nailed, I more or less succeeded in what I wanted to show, and when a fellow fan sees it they should get all this Will Graham feels, this capture is not merely "I took a little nap and now I woke up" look.

Pictures with suspicious areas...guess what, I'm currently drawing another one with whatthefu*kisthissupposedtolooklike area around the mouth = pretty important for likeness and dilemma how closely to follow it because it's just weird. I just tool a look at very small, darker screencap of the same scene that at least showed me what I should not draw or make that noticeable so that's something too.

You're most welcome! I don't perceive it as "I took a little nap...", even tho I'm not a fan, but perhaps it's because I know more or less about the poor Will. Thank you, Tumblr

I'm a bit behind watching Dexter, I've seen only 3 episodes [I'm watching it with my mum, she doesn't have time every evening ]. I want to draw Debra and Dexter together in colour as the "goodbye tribute". I planned to do this in August, but... well, plans are just plans.
Hannibal... maybe some time in the future? I'm watching too many series at the moment + it seems a bit depressing and I need something positive these days. I'm surprised that there haven't been any homicide scene involving Hannibal Thanks for the recommendation, tho!

Oh, you masochist! Good luck then!

Yeah, a little depressing Hm...something happy to suggest, sorry I don't do happy much. Do you wanna know how many shows I ended up watching? 15 4 new just this year. In my "defence", only 4 of them have 21-24 episodes per season, others are 3, 4, 8, 12, 16, etc. Luther just ended (there might be a movie sometime in the future ) and Dexter is about to.  As one tumblr post says, I watch too many shows about murder.  How much is your too many shows?

Ilojleen In reply to WickedIllusionArt [2013-08-30 21:40:59 +0000 UTC]

OH DEAR LORD. Not that many I've been watching 3 tv-shows during these holidays [one of them I started from the beginning, 4 seasons 13-16 episodes; the other one is Dexter and I also rewatched Sherlock], but a total number of the series I watched/have been watching this year is 10 [some of them I finished: Being Human, Desperate Romantics, House M.D. - yeah, that's the only tv-show I had to watch with narrator so I always was waiting until tv would broadcast it and the last season was finally aired this spring]. There will be new seasons of my 4 or 5 fav series in Autumn.

Haha no problem. Dexter isn't a sweet and happy show either, especially since Debra found out that Dex is a serial killer [let's not forget about the trauma connected with the death of Rita, but it was a long time ago], but still there are funny parts [just half an hour ago I was laughing at Masuka's mistake concerning the certain young lady hah]. Hannibal appears more gloomy, I don't want to get more gloomy than I am at the moment

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WickedIllusionArt In reply to Ilojleen [2013-08-30 22:56:45 +0000 UTC]

Well, me too, more or less. Dexter and Breaking Bad - both shows are ending in a few episodes, and True Blood (the season just ended)

There are 15 in total airing at various times during the year, many new ones I marathoned whole to catch up and now I'm waiting for the new seasons. I had only 7-8 max. overlapping at same time.

From, lets say, May-July I watched the whole of The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Whitechapel and Ripper Street. Oh, and Hannibal, but that's a new show so watched it a bit later at once. And I also watched 3 at once+1 ep. of Luther and that's the whole season (I thought it was airing in Autumn until I accidentally found a little text post on tumblr that talked about Luther and I was like what?! the whole new season almost aired and I almost missed it! haha)

Yeah, definitely wait then until you're ready for poor, tortured, somebody help Will Graham (but NOT you, Hannibal!). October-December movie/TV show related will be crazy! I think we might explode from all the awesomness. So many long expected stuff, Sherlock's finally back, DW 50th anniversary, new Doctor, great movies, everything!

Ilojleen In reply to WickedIllusionArt [2013-09-20 09:42:15 +0000 UTC]

So it's 4-5 in my case. Oh, I forgot to add other shows I watch, there are 3 Polish programmes [one talk show, one series and one talent show]. There was time when I spent 15 hours in front of PC/tv weekly xD

I haven't heard of the series you mentioned [apart from BB and TWD], sorry

Yeah, since you've mentioned it... what's wrong with Will? Just a summary of the summary, please. Weak psyche? Sudden personal problems? Every time I see him on my Tumblr dash I feel for him, except this one time when I saw him tripping over his own backpack
I'm not a fan of Doctor Who, but I'm waiting to see Sherlock. However, I don't know when it will be aired in the end, there are too many contrary dates .___.  I can't wait to see poor human Cas! I'm not sure how I feel about the comebacks of Bobby [again? Then you shouldn't have killed him!] and Gabriel. Hope I didn't spoil you anything, btw. I am also looking forward to Desolation of Smaug, although our dear dragon looks a bit pathetic, I hope this was one unfortunate scene in the trailer where he looked so artificial

WickedIllusionArt In reply to Ilojleen [2013-09-20 17:43:00 +0000 UTC]

Not exactly. Will is a very complicated character. There's this one fantastic Hannibal meta tumblr with tons of interesting reading and analysis of various things, characters, etc. Hannibal related, but you're not a fan. Not yet! This is as short as I can get: Will's a bit special. "What he has is pure empathy. He can assume your point of view, or mine, or maybe some points of view that scare him.  It’s an uncomfortable gift, Jack.” - Hannibal. ...only when talking to Will he uses words such as empathy disorder, all part of this manipulating scheme and messing with his head. Hannibal is greatly responsible for Will's current mental state and situation he found himself in.

Anyway, his ability/gift if more like a curse really. He's a gifted criminal profiler and hunter of serial killers . He has ability to empathize with serial killers and mentally re-create their crimes with vivid detail. All that in general can get so intense, all the feelings, it affects him. It's taking its toll. Now you combine that with a show's plot and Hannibal's doings...Aside from his current fragile mental state, poor baby, he's interesting in many other ways, but you gotta watch.

Well, neither was I (DW fan) until a year ago, and all that after years of having negative opinion about it while knowing it must be good if it lasted for so long and is so popular even though I had a couple of failed tries to start watching behind me.

Rarely watching trailers, so can't say about the dragon, but looking forward to hearing his voice. .

Yeah, human Cas! We'll have a true trio now, probably. Not sure what I think about it, I love Bobby very much, but it seemed he was really gone for good, so I don't know. To be honest, only the season finale has given me some hope the show might get better again. It was like a ray of sunshine. No matter how much I love(d) it, it should have ended with season 5, or was it 6? The last season I was watching more out of the habit than genuine interest in the plot, I'm sad to say. I like the characters and the cast too much to just abandon it - I'm all-the-way-to-the-end kind of watcher. What I start, I finish. Like with Dexter, aside from occasional highlights, it just hasn't been very good for a long time, and far from fantastic. The new season looks promising, but we gotta wait and see.

This reply wasn't supposed to be this long.

Wow, thanks for a long explanation, but truth be told, I kinda expected it, even tho I had asked for a summary So thank you for taking your time to explain it it details. I believe such capability is a curse really. There are benefits for cops for sure [in finding criminals], but poor guy will kick the bucket one day! Unless Hannibal eats him first, lol.

I'm not a big fan of sci-fi , that's why I may never force myself in watching Doctor Who. I believe it might be a great show, but yeah...

Oh, the trailer doesn't reveal much! At least the old one, there will be released a new one today! Anyway, you haven't read the book, have you? Because if you had read it,  there would be no spoliers for you Although there are some plots in the movie which don't appear in the book. Oh, and the old trailer I've seen: for the first time I happened to see it with Croatian subtitles, "drak" sounds so cute

As I saw in the trailer [haha], it'll take some time until Cas and Winchesters get together. I had the same impression as you did, I watched last 3 seasons because of the habit and the feeling I can't abandon such great characters as Dean, Sam and Cas are, but the plot was weak. This tablets issue was too messed up. Frankly speaking, human Cas is what interest me the most now.

WickedIllusionArt In reply to Ilojleen [2013-10-01 13:57:59 +0000 UTC]

No problem. I hope you start watching it sometime, Hannibal I mean. I'm, for example, not into horror, but I love thrillers!, and you'll very rarely see me watching a horror movie. On the other hand, horror as genre I don't watch excludes TV shows! I mean, I watch SPN, etc.

I said I rarely ever watch the trailers, not not watching them because of spoilers. Of course I read the book, it was my homework before movie coming out, but it seems I didn't read it that carefully because I was like that new Evangeline Lily's character who? There are quite a lot of parts that don't appear in the book, or there's not a lot written about them, but are interesting and important and making the movie much better than if it was only following the plot of that little book.

Lol, yeah, human Cas is what interests me the most too. And I thought so, wonder how will they meet. Will Cas try to use a phone and call them if he has the number memorized, which of course he hasn't. Well, the cast seems to think this will be a good season if I remember, so wait and see! I really hope so!

"drak"??? What is that supposed to mean? Either they invented a new Croatian word when I wasn't paying attention or those were not Croatian subtitles. Now you got me interested, that word, what was it referring to? To the dragon? Oh, wait, my Google translator says "drak" on Czesh, Slovak, and possibly some other language means "dragon". That's it then. Dragon on Croatian is "zmaj". Not so cute, it more gives scary, dangerous vibe.

Ilojleen In reply to WickedIllusionArt [2013-10-01 20:16:18 +0000 UTC]

I may, I don't know yet, but not soon for sure.
Please, SPN used to be horror, now it's more like a comedy series

Oh, I see! I read the book years ago, but I forgot most things. I didn't want to re-read it before I see the movie, because I wanted to have... some kind of surprise I read it again after I had seen the movie. Last month I bought the original, English version of Hobbit and  I want to read it once again
I like that Peter Jackson made some changes. Some plots were depicted in the movie in a better way. I can't recall all things which I prefer more in the movie than in the book, but for instance the late arrival of Thorin [in the book he fell out with the others when Bilbo opened the door, which doesn't really suit the majestic Thorin ] and especially the scene with trolls. And I don't mind that Jackson introduced Radagast and Tauriel

I'd not be so sure about Cas not remembering Dean's phone number I hope they get along, tho. Dean might be angry at first that Cas wasn't around, but, of course, it's not his fault.
The cast always likes every season because they get money

Geez, what an embarrassment I must have not paid too much attention on the subtitles while watching the trailer or my memory somehow made me convince it was Croatian! I dunno D: But yeah, I meant "drak" is "dragon" and apparently it was Czech.  In Polish it's a lil' bit similar to Croatian: "smok"

WickedIllusionArt In reply to Ilojleen [2013-10-01 20:46:42 +0000 UTC]

When I think about it, I remember it took a little while to get used to SPN at the beginning, the unexpected horror stuff and you're right, not very scary anymore. Or we just got used to it.

It's better not having the book fresh in your memory if you're about to watch something based on it. It's better to read it afterwards again if you must. So you did it right.

It was a bad attempt at a joke. Like, he was an angled, he didn't need to do human stuff like using a telephone (although he did use it at least once in certain situation(s)), as well as I don't think getting all together again will be like: hello, Dean, it's Cas, come get me, I'm at this...

It's because all these languages are Slavic languages and are more or less similar, from almost the same to very different, but still with some words that are the same or could be guessed easily what they mean even if not spelled or pronounced the same.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ilojleen In reply to WickedIllusionArt [2013-10-15 21:26:22 +0000 UTC]

Nah, I think it's not us, used to this stuff, but it's not really scary anymore During these holidays I rewatched a couple of episodes from season 1 [with my friend who has just started watching SPN] and they were scarier

So, have you seen the first episode? Haha, Cas called Dean! I hope the trio will be soon together! Ezekiel seems a bit suspicious, tho. I'm not sure if we should trust him

Yes, obviously You're right! But I did a funny discovery when my Hungarian friends were visiting Poland this summer. Hungarian is from an Uralic language family, yet they have some similar words to our Indo-European languages. When they were speaking Hungarian, I understood: cukor [cukier, sugar], kolbasz [kiełbasa, sausage] or satan [szatan, satan. And no, we weren't summoning satan, just talking about mimes that work at Market Square ].

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WickedIllusionArt In reply to Ilojleen [2013-10-15 23:40:27 +0000 UTC]

Hhaahahaha yeah, Cas actually just called Dean! I'm almost disappointed.

He's suspicious to me too. I don't think he plans to leave Sam's body. It's a good vessel, once cured, of course. We'll see.

Interesting. I could guess the first to words. "Cukar" is sugar (šećer) on local dialect here where I live, while kobasa is word for sausage (kobasica) that people sometimes use when they want to say something in a funny way, and it can even refer to di*k.

As for Hungarian language, it's too weird, doesn't remind you of any other language much, not at all similar to Croatian. So English, German, Italian speaking tourists are no problem, those are top 3 learned languages here, I think, but Hungarian...nobody has a clue what they're talking, what they want, like, who speaks Hungarian? It's much easier to deal with non English speaking Czech, Russian, etc. much better chances at guessing what they want.

Ilojleen In reply to WickedIllusionArt [2013-10-26 20:40:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it'd be a surprise if Ezekiel turned out to be a good angel. I don't know what's up with this show, every guy with wings is a douchbag, even Castiel was hah!

A sausage can be used to describe this manly part in Polish, too. But I guess it's a matter of a phallic shape

It looks bizzare, I agree and you can't almost tell where the words end, but surprisingly, I understood 1% of my friends were talking about to themselves
That's true, it's easier to understand people who speak Slavic languages, but the words can be also confusing. For example, in Russian "a name" is "zavood" [I don't know how to write it,lol], but in Polish "zawód" is "a job, occupation". Or "divka" in Czech is "a girl", but it reminds of a Polish word for a wh*re
