Description For the beginning of the new year I've decided to start a new mini-series of fashions, but this time around I am going to focus on my Fooled story and redesign the wardrobe of the kingdom's reigning fashionista, Princess Lucia!

I originally created "Fooled" in 2012 (OMG I can't believe it's almost 5 years old!), and my original design included a sketch of Princess Lucia wearing a gown similar to this one.  When I drew up more costume concepts in 2013, I included a variant of the gown from that original sketch in shades of burgundy and plum.  Since the entire Fooled universe was inspired by Italian Renaissance art I had tried to incorporate the high-waisted dress styles that were common in that era, but I soon found that when you are working a faux-Disney style Empire waistlines are not all that flattering.  My original design was also *too* detailed and turned out to be a pain to draw and keep consistent.  So when I launched the Fooled serial in 2014 this was the final redesigned version of Lucia's signature gown.

I call it her signature gown because this is the one she's wearing when she's introduced in the story in Chapter 3 - although now that I think about it, she only wears it for one scene in the whole novel!  Oh well, I think it's pretty flattering, so I guess it just makes an impression.

Don't miss the rest of Lucia's wardrobe:

Oh dear: that impossible wasp-waist so favoured by Disney (and every other cartoon franchise). Yup, you got that right.

Have you seen that series, I think it's on Bored Panda, where an artist has 're-waisted' heroines to normal proportions? Hang on ...

PING! - www.boredpanda.com/realistic-d…

I'd never given it much thought, but of course clothes & fabrics have always been simplified - purely to enable people to consistently and repeatedly draw animation cels. Disney, unfortunately, goes too far and their clothes end up looking like some sort of moulded jello. Mind you, so does Miyazaki.

Yep, I've seen that before - it's a cool idea to draw attention to Disney's weird stylization trends but when you have the normal waist yet leave the giant heads, huge eyeballs, and anti-gravity hairstyles I feel like it loses some of its message lol.  In fact I never had much of a problem with Disney's style until they started branching into CG.  I guess the "molded clothes" and inhuman proportions are more believable in 2D, but when they are rendering hyperrealistic textures for giant bushbaby eyes (coughRapunzelcoughElsa) it starts to veer into uncanny valley for me.  I've always thought that Dreamworks did a much better job experimenting with different shapes and body types (both male and female) even when they were in 2D but especially in CG format.

Good points re 3D CGI, especially re eyes! "Welcome to Uncanny Valley, where all females suffer the same tragic genetic disorders." Yup, too much.

On that note, I recently decided to cosplay a female anime character, and since I'm a 60 year-old man with muttonchops and chicken-neck I decided to go with a mask. And as the obsessive Aspie that I am, I made her face *exactly* as it is in the manga and anime:
Big.
Distorted.
Eyes.

Went to Supanova (it's like Comic-con, Australian) and ... nobody liked it. Some were utterly freaked. They literally jumped away in involuntary terror when I 'came to life'. (Hey, I was just doing some harmless 'statue-ing' to fuck with their minds, okay?)

I got remarks like, "Euw! Kill it with fire!" "Fuck that's creepy!" "Hideous!" and plain old "Holy crap!"  ['Hello, people! I'm in here; I'm listening!']

Yeah, my worst cosplay ever. Yet the same people were mobbing Darth Vader and Micky Mouse. Go figure

I'm currently reading Fooled for the first time and love it so far, your OC writing is great! Looking forward to seeing redesigns as well, it's so interesting to see concept art while reading. Lucia looks gorgeous, as usual, in this one!
