Description
This is a pale giant horsefly. Found in the meadows of the United Kingdom. Male horseflies feed on plant juices, but female horseflies drink blood in order to lay eggs. A female horsefly can cut through a large grazer's skin with its sword-like mouthparts. After cutting, the horsefly drips some anti-clotting saliva that keeps blood flowing from the wound, which it soaks up with a sponge-like tongue. After drinking blood, the female horsefly is ready to lay eggs on a muddy area. The horsefly has great vision, thanks to its brightly, colored eyes. It can see the world in nearly 360 degrees.
