    In a Nutshell:
Raatek is an insightful knowledge seeker who is dauntless in his pursuit of what he believes is right, as well as a patient (but perhaps too honest) friend.

    Major Traits:
Intellectual, Creative, Quirky, Practical, Detached, Insightful, Single-Minded, Condescending, Honest, Tactless, Credulous, Social, Patient, Extreme

    Detailed:
Raatek is an intellectual and has always been curious. He tries to see things through objective eyes and whether good or evil the amazing intricacies of the world are not lost on him. But his pursuit of knowledge is not just for his own personal interest and fulfillment. He also believes that knowledge is the ultimate power. Only with knowledge can you learn the best solution to act upon. But sometimes knowledge does not come easy. Having been taught from a young age that anything is possible for those who do not give up, Raatek enjoys problem solving and with a creative mind will draw ideas from any aspect of life to apply to any problem he may be facing. Nothing is too silly or absurd to be considered. This can attract some strange looks from those around him as he does his “research” or mumbles about a new outlandish theory. Raatek is not a wolf of faith and has trouble believing things that he cannot see with his eyes. Evidence alone can open his mind.

Raatek does not only like to learn, he also likes to act. And once he believes a potential solution is found, he is eager to try its application. Despite being quirky, when there is a job to do he is practical and grounded, good at shoving aside the complicated mess in his brain and mapping what he believes is the best way forward in the face of challenges and tragedy. He keeps a level head and does not easily give in to despair, anger, or hopelessness. However his inner emotions are more complex than even he realizes; for all his insight of the outside world he rarely looks inward at himself, and so he shuts most of his emotions behind a calm and casual facade. What he sees as keeping one’s cool may come across as apathy or detachment.

With his keen observation, Raatek is adept at understanding where someone with a different belief is coming from and seeing the logic that led to their perspective. But in his eyes that doesn’t make them any less wrong. It makes them misguided, or greedy, or too dim to grasp the full extent of the situation. This is especially true when applied to the current division in Almos. He just doesn’t see how individuals can have priorities different from his own. After all, what could be more important than restoring peace and harmony to their island home? Those with goals other than that he looks down upon. Even on subjects smaller than the fate of the world Raatek can be dismissive of the opinions of others, preferring to trust his own opinion as the right one, and thus he can act quite condescending. He is open to being wrong if enough evidence is presented, just don’t expect an apology as he most likely did not even notice if he was being rude.

While not particularly chatty, when compelled to speak Raatek does not hold back what he thinks or what the truth is as he sees it. He does not have much of a filter, and is unabashedly honest in most situations. This is helpful because he is genuine and will give a straight answer. But he can also be tactless and say things in a manner that may hurt or offend someone. He is always confused when this trait reflects negatively on himself, after all he’s just telling the truth! But still it will not be uncommon that he ends up pinned to the ground by an irritated superior irked by a careless comment. Luckily hostility tends to roll right off him, and rarely does he take things personally. In fact, Raatek as a whole is quite laid back and patient with other wolves, and due to this his honesty is not always so biting to hear. His own integrity leaves him quite susceptible to being tricked or deceived as he doesn’t really get the point of lying and therefore tends not to easily notice when other wolves do it and will take what they say at face value (to a point).

Raatek may not be the most socially gifted wolf, but he still likes to be social. He is inclusive, often inquiring of quieter individuals, and enjoys collaboration and debate and working with/learning from others. Or even just spending time with others. And despite his very one-track-mind and staunch beliefs he is generally reasonable, compassionate and does mean well. Even with the afflicted… only as long as they seek to rid themselves of their affliction anyway. Afflicted who embrace their magic, well… that’s another story.

Raatek is usually patient, but there are some things he has no patience for. Afflicted who embrace their magic, and wolves who encourage or accept magic, he finds recklessly selfish and desperately narrow-minded. He feels pity and/or contempt for these individuals more than straight-up hate, after all they are just poor flawed little wolves too stupid to understand what’s going on or who have lost their way. But that doesn’t excuse them from the many lives they have cost. He may be generally peaceful himself and not one to intentionally pick fights, but he still stands beside his Alpha in that sometimes force is the only way to fight ignorance, and if a wolf doesn’t see the truth, and cannot be swayed by reason, then they are standing in the way of restoring peace and balance in the world, and must be removed.

    Notes:
  • Stares absently at individuals or off into space as he thinks.
  • Chews branches a lot.
  • Mumbles/talks to himself.
  • Paces to clear his head.
  • Tends to repeat words several times for emphasis (or to buy himself more time on what he will say next).
  • When inspiration hits him he often forgets to sleep and/or eat, and appears in a great mood.
  • Enjoys bad puns and straightforward jokes though more subtle humor and sarcasm tend to be lost on him. He will either be oblivious or if he gets the sense he is the butt of a joke he may irritably demand an explanation. No time for your games!
  • He likes to give unsolicited advice and "wise words", as well as shoving himself into the lives of his friends to try to help solve their problems.
  • Will give creative/strange gifts to friends based on what he thinks they would like.

History:
Raatek grew up in turbulent times, when the wolves of the Dreaming Isle were still one, but the winds of change were stirring. Raatek was an only child, doted on by adoring parents who encouraged his natural compassion and curiosity. They taught him that every problem had a solution if one worked hard enough to find it, and history was the greatest teacher of all. His parents' interpretation of that history was that a wolf must respect the land, and live practically and in peace. His parents did not believe that magic had ever existed, and thus neither did Raatek. A wolf must learn to survive on his own merits, and though humans existed the wolves had done wrong by them, and were delusional with the power they had thought themselves to possess. So his parents, and Raatek as he came of age to understand, were troubled by the small but growing sector of the pack that fancied themselves Gods. What a travesty! The gall of these wolves, especially the ringleader Malaysia. But, well, they were well known to be quacks at least among his circle, so while his parents seemed concerned he personally did not see them as any significant force and certainly not any threat.

Meanwhile, Raatek followed in his father’s pawsteps to become a herbalist, enjoying the mental stimulus of diagnosing patients and then giving them proper treatment and watching them recover. He was proud of his work, and grew content and fulfilled with his calling to heal. To problem-solve. To keep the pack strong.

He was still rather early in his herbalist career when Svajone and his crew landed upon the island shores. He was filled with wonder as he watched the strange creatures with his own eyes, creatures that had not been seen since the days of the elders. It was a marvel! Until loud snarls and blurs of motions rushed past him, and all he could do was watch in horror as Malaysia and her followers sprang upon the humans in a bloody slaughter. The most impactful factor about it was the sheer number of Malaysia’s followers. It wasn’t the majority of the pack, but it was a lot compared to the number he believed fell under such a philosophy. He was dumbfounded to see wolves he thought he knew, wolves he thought were his friends, wolves he himself had helped to heal, use their teeth in such a greed-fueled quest.

Raatek, and his faith in wolfkind, was shattered by what he had witnessed. He was grateful for the many wolves who stood by him in believing that this was insane, but still he could not fathom the number of wolves who had fallen prey to Malaysia’s fantasy. A darkness began to settle in the wolf’s heart.

Raatek continued his work as an herbalist in training, trying to just focus on that and the friends that were still surrounding him, but strange things were beginning to happen. The Blood Moon overtook their yearly lake-side celebration, and that moment was the most afraid he had been in his life up until that point. Despite brushing that (and the bones and moving shadows) off after the fact, he had a nagging feeling of dread that things may never be normal again…

The nagging feeling turned into a certainty when the first wave of death hit. As an herbalist he examined the bodies and was dumbfounded when a cause of death could not be found. As a wolf of reason he could not discount the possibility that there could be something else at play here, something… beyond the natural order. And despite their denial of being involved and their own dead, Raatek had no doubt Kol was behind this one way or another. And for the first time in his life he began to wonder if perhaps there was magic. And if so, it was a dark and terrible thing. And the power-hungry Kol were to blame. Raatek confided in his parents that Kol could be playing with dangerous forces and something must be done. His parents waved away his suspicions of magic and urged him to choose peace and patience as they dealt with wolves who were once their friends and family, but with lives on the line Raatek was doubtful that such a tactic would work against wolves capable of anything.

In the next wave of deaths Raatek was devastated that his parents were among them. With symptoms such as coughing up blood many other herbalists believed this time it may be illness, and while he conceded that it could be the case Raatek was still suspicious and his mind was on the extraordinary possibilities.

Time passed and Raatek found his priorities shifting. Along with his parents, many wolves were dying around him and there was not a thing he or any of his herbalist colleagues could do about it. He finally decided (after a long time already of having difficulty focusing on his current task) that perhaps they were focusing on the wrong thing. It was no natural sickness that was causing this. If they wanted to save their packmates then they needed to find the cure to the ultimate ailment; magic.

With a smoldering contempt for the reckless Kol who would unlock and nurse this curse upon the land, and a steadfast determination to find a way to return the island to the way it once was, Raatek found hope in the powerful she-wolf Yetta, who knew that waiting around for peace was not an option when faced with the Kol too drunk with power to ever care about the ramifications of their actions, nor was trying to tame the deadly plague of magic for any sort of good.

And so, under Yetta, Raatek left his herbalist roots behind to become an acolyte to focus his studies on the magic malady. Its causes, its impacts, and ultimately its end.
