One of my jobs before college was working at CF&I...formerly John A. Roebling &sons steel mill in Roebling New Jersey (part of the town of Florence where I lived then.) The town was built by Roebling, for the mill.. and the mill was there to make the steel cables used in the Brooklyn Bridge. www.google.com/search?site=&tb… ; thats a page of google image shots of it

The network of steel cables is quite amazing. I took quite a few close-ups of them. They look great. That bridge was one of the major engineering feats of the 19th century I believe.

Indeed... The plant made cables for that as well as the golden gate and a number of other things...

I think the Brooklyn Bridge was kind of the template for a lot of bridges that followed, like the Golden Gate . . . They learnt from what was accomplished with the Brooklyn Bridge.
