This is my version of La Befana, who is also North's wife. Befana's personality is like Mary Poppins and Nanny McPhee; serious, but knows how to have fun.

Name: La Befana

Other Names: Bertha, Pertcha, the Christmas Witch

Gender: Female

Race: Fairy/Elf

season: Winter

Morality: Mostly Good

Occupation: Fairy God Mother, magical Nanny, Christmas Witch

Bio Info: In the Movie-verse, after North has become a legend he comes across Befana (in her Hag form) and convinces her to teach him magic. As time goes by he starts to see her true form and he is taken in by her heart. He eventually discovers that she's a fairy who goes around delivering wishes and toys to people in need.

She and North fall in love, but Befana had cast a spell of herself to always travel, granting helping other however she could. This means that as she cannot stay anywhere, or with anyone. North finds a loop hole and realizes that she could visit and they could cross paths. They do this every year between

December 25th and January 6th. (Also known as the 12 days of Christmas.) From then on North would deliver the gifts while Befana would travel around the world, helping mortals, granting wishes and giving a human what they need to be better, which sometimes involves cruelty.

Before meeting North, Befana was a powerful fairy (female elf) who lost her husband to war and her child to still birth. As a result she had distanced herself and locked herself in her grief for many years until three travelers came to her door. They convinced her to stop mourning and make a difference in the world. Befana took this to another step, placing a spell on herself to always go where she was needed and to leave when she wasn't. While she did this to make sure she would never waste her life again, this later became a curse for Befana.

Relationships:

North: North is her husband and they love each other dearly. Because they have so little time together they cherish the days they do.

At the beginning they were at odds due to both having stubborn personalities (also he was scared of her because she looked like Nanny McPhee.). Quickly they learned to work together and over an amount of travel and time fall in love. While they can't be together all the time, they always make sure to find each other between Christmas and Epiphany.

Sandy: They cross paths often and Sandy has even helped Befana on occasions. Sandy feels sorry for her predicament with North.

Toothania and Bunnymund: Never met, but heard stories about the other.

Jack Frost: Befana meets him after he has become a guardian. Once he got past his shock, Jack became curious about the witch. At first he is shocked how mean she could be, but sees that in the end she's pushing people to become better. While doesn't always approve of the methods, he respects her goals.

Pitch: Being North's wife is enough for Pitch to hate her, but the fact that she gets in his way doesn't help. While Befana sees him as an enemy, she also pities him deeply, having once been in that situation as well.

Powers: Usual magic tricks along with cursing and granting wishes. Her responsibility is to help people finds things to help them better their lives and others.

Involuntary abilities: N/A

Equipment: Broom that changes to a wand, two wedding rings; one from North and the other from her first husband (this one she wears on her neck.)

Other: Her design is based on Cinderella and Jessica from “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” The dress is supposed to be Italian, but I read that she wears black so I made it so. The old woman version—needs work, lots of it. I made her a fairy on a whim. Hopefully didn't offend anyone by it.

That would be interesting. Santa has so many myths and I've only been able to find one about Befana.

The only question is what kind of movie? Something short and poignant like "Frozen Fever" or a full-length Italian adventure like "The Thief Lord"? Either way would be fine by me.

I never saw the "Thief Lord" but I'd prefer a full length movie like the old Don Bluth movies. It can be origin story of a good witch who falls into depression after the loss of her child until three men come to her door and convince her to use her magic to help the children, which she does by conjuring toys. Heck, one of the old men could be Santa and she could become the leader of the elves who make the toys. Something like that.

I personally prefer the idea of a group of kids hearing the legend of Befana and trying to find her. They'd live in this Italian village that's down on it's luck and hope that she'd help them with her magic. Or they hear a rumor the the legendary witch is living in their town and try to find out who she is. But I like your idea too.

Or we could combine both; the old men (who are based on the magi) convince her to venture out and she finds the village, or the children tell the men of the witch and they go to her for help.

Either way before that, my personal theory is that Befana is fairy/elf who married a mortal who died as I want her to have a connection to the elves for some reason.

I like her better as a witch, because there aren't a lot of really "good" fairy-tale witches out there.

Now that you mention it, yeah. There aren't a lot of good witches in media; there Glinda (though in the movie she basically attached a target to Dorothy), Wendy (from Wendy and Casper), the discworld witches... um, anyone else?

Hmm, maybe her dead husband could be an elf who died. Like I said, I want her to have some sort of connection to the fae.

Baba Yaga is sometimes good, so is Morgan Le Fay. And of course, there are the Hogwarts Witches and Samantha from "Bewitched".
I read somewhere that some witches worship fairies, or maybe Befana's half-elf and that's where she gets her powers^!^
