Description
The Bat-eared Fox, Otocyon megalotis, is a unique canid (member of the dog family) that occurs in Southern Africa as well as Northeast Africa. These two populations are now very far apart but there must have been a time when they were connected. Bat-eared foxes use their enormous ears to find the small critters they eat - mainly harvester termites but they also eat other insects and invertebrates, and small vertebrates. They are no danger to poultry or domestic animals. They have more teeth than other carnivores, and special muscles that allow them to open and close their jaws very rapidly.
