Description Continuing with the ancient antilocaprids (pronghorns)!  This is good old Cosoryx furcatus, the fork-headed pronghorn.  Like Merycodus, it had simple branched 'horns', that started out covered in skin which rubbed off to expose the bone.  They were not shed the way deer's antlers are.  Antilocaprids are not closely related to deer or to antelopes ... instead, their closest modern relatives are giraffes and okapis!  At a time they were almost as diverse in North America as antelopes are in Africa today.  I am going to feature lots of them here!  Cosoryx lived from about 16 million years ago until about 9 million years ago.  Its facial pattern of course comes from my own imagination.  Pencil drawing, coloured with Photoshop.

Yep!  Old-style forks also had just two 'tines'.

I swear, some of these horned or whatevered critters look like they have mini-antennae aerials on their heads. :/

So...the skin rubbing off...was that a yearly thing (like 'velvet'...even though the horns themselves didn't shed) or throughout their lifetime, (like the tips of giraffe horns)?  Anyway, neat critters!

Hi! Thanks for the comment.  As far as I understand, the skin will rub off just once and then not re-generate ... so basically probably when they grow up.  Once the horns are 'bare' they stay that way.
