Description

Diictodon was a very successful dicynodontian, a proto-mammal that was quite advanced but not on the line that led to true mammals. It lived in South Africa, in the Late Permian (about 255 million years ago) and perhaps also in Asia.  It lived in burrows in a dry landscape.  Diictodon is more numerous as fossils than any other species living in the Permian in South Africa.  It reached a length of about 45 cm and ate plants, perhaps digging out tubers for their moisture.

I reconstruct it here with smooth skin; I will soon do a version with fur as well to please you folks who want furry dicynodonts.

So it's not known whether it had hair or not?

No, currently we have no idea if it had any hair at all.

I remember first seeing these little guys in Walking with Monsters, and they struck me as almost like the burrowing rodents of the Permian period.

They pretty much were. Come to think of it, a lot of the anomodonts at the time were sort of like rodent analogues.

There were quite a few burrowers in the Permian!  Thanks for commenting!
