Gangraia anatolica's fossils were recently found in Turkey. The site is rich in fossils of mammals that lived about 8 million years ago (the late Miocene), including large apes that are close to the ancestry of humans! These ones were also ancestral of sorts. Gangraia seems to have been close to the ancestor from which modern alcelaphines (long-faced antelopes), hippotragines (horse antelopes) and the sheep and goat tribe evolved. Well-preserved skulls of males as well as females were found; the horns of the male were very long and slender, swept back and ending in straight tips. The front of the muzzle wasn't found, so we're not quite sure what this beastie ate. If close to alcelaphines, it might have been an exclusive grazer, but if closer to sheep and goats, it might have been a mixed grazer/browser. Or maybe it just did its own thing! The female having horns might mean that it lived in herds, with both males and females fighting each other for dominance.
