Description
The Ornate Frog, Hildebrandtia ornata, occurs from South Africa northwards into tropical Africa. It is a rather squat, pudgy, toad-like frog, but a true frog nonetheless. It is quite variable but is always decorated with bold, black stripes and blotches, over a background colour that can vary from green to reddish or golden brown, sometimes even light cream. It's not a big frog, reaching about 65 mm/2.5" in snout-to-vent length. The male has paired vocal sacs, one on each side of the lower jaw. This frog is found in savannah country, breeding in shallow pools and pans. Its call is a short, nasal 'quack'. Watercolour.
