Description
Mouse Lemurs were once thought to constitute just a single species, but genetic and other studies show that there are actually over twenty species! They look very similar and likely only recently diverged. This is the Grey Mouse Lemur, Microcebus murinus, the most widespread species. It lives in moist to dry forest, mostly in the west of Madagascar. Mouse lemurs are the tiniest of primates, this one reaching 28 cm in length and 65 grams in weight. Madam Berthe's mouse lemur is only about 30 g, the size of a house mouse! These lemurs eat fruit and insects, and can go into a kind of torpor when food is scarce and temperatures are low.
