Description Acting upon remarks from Lapis-Lazuri I did a few alterations of the pygmy hippo painting, rescanned it and 'tweaked' it with photoshop. Here is the other version: [link]

Let me again mention that this is based on Nesihonsu's photograph of a young pygmy hippo that you can see here: [link]

I put more contrast in the background both in terms of colour values and light-and-dark. This changed the way the hippo itself scanned, so I used Photoshop to increase contrast in its body here and there. I also added a bit more green to the leaves, since they were quite washed out in the new scan. And I compared with how the real painting looked, trying to get the colours and values in the computer image to look like those in the one I painted.

What do you think ... improved, or not? Any other suggestions?

It looks more balanced as a whole, the colors of the background and the hippo are more harmonic compared to each other. However, perhaps the contrast in the background is a little too strong (although I like how you touched the details, they don't seem as flat as before). Also, I miss that strong gloss on the hippo's head, with the contrasting yellow and blue which used to create a slight morning-time atmosphere. I guess something inbetween would be best.

I had them next to each other to compare better. The new one seems darker and has a bit more contrast.
Can't tell you which one I prefer though, they both look good.

Nice improvement, in my opinion. I don't think that the paint needs more adjustments

Thanks a lot! I hope it's all right now. But I do want to later do an acrylic version of this as well ...
