Description
The Red Deer, Cervus elaphus, is pretty much the standard 'deer' of the world. Still, it is an impressive species, called 'Edelhert' ('Noble Deer') in Afrikaans. They occur naturally in Europe, Asia and Northern Africa, and have been introduced a few other places, where they actually cause ecological damage. There are several subspecies or local forms, some of which might be 'good' species. A stag typically weighs 160-240 kg, while the hind weighs 120-160 kg. This makes it on average the fourth largest deer species of the world, the Moose, Wapiti and the Sambar of Asia being bigger. Exceptional red deer stags of the Carpathian mountains can weigh 500 kg but those of Corsica may weigh only 80-100 kg. This species has been around for at least 800 000 years.
