Description This is a Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird or Tinker Barbet, Pogoniulus chrysoconus.  It is tiny, about 4.5"/12 cm in total length.  It is named for its golden-yellow forehead patch and for its repetitive, ringing 'tink-tink-tink-tink' calls.  Like other barbets, it excavates its nests in soft or dead wood, but doesn't peck holes like a woodpecker, instead biting and wrenching out wads of wood with its strong bill.  Because of its size, it can get by with smaller trees than the bigger hole-nesters.  It is quite common in dry woodland habitat in South Africa. Tinkerbirds eat mostly insects, which they glean from twigs and foliage, and a bit of fruit.  Small acrylic painting.

You bring life and liveliness to subjects that Audubon couldn't.

Whut?  I'm sure Audobon would have done fine if he was over here to depict these!  But thanks!

Oh, don't get me wrong.  Audubon was a brilliant painter of wildlife, worthy of his acclaim.  Unfortunately, if I'm not mistaken (as I often am, I must admit), his subjects often tended to be dead and taxidermied.  While useful for keeping the birds he was referencing from moving during painting, it's still extremely difficult to capture life in something that no longer has any.

Yeah I know about that.  We're extremely lucky these days with our binoculars and photographing gadgets allowing us to glimpse and capture these wonderful little things as you say as they live and go about their business.

Oh boy, this is so very beautiful! The details are amazing, and the colors are so very pleasant! The background too - it looks both very natural and also discrete, not drawing attention away from the birdie, but complementing them and adding a feeling of their natural environment. About the background, I especially like that it isn't monotonous - the gradient from dark to light is a very good decision, even more so as it emphasizes more on the white and darker part of the bird. Overall, great piece!
By the way, judging by the texture I assume it is a rather small painting, and that only makes it even more impressive that you've achieved such marvelous detail!
