So what kind of person is Megumi?

Not a gentle giantess, certainly!
She has different personalities when she's an oni than when she's in human form. As an oni, she is an ill-tempered, unpredictable brute driven by emotions and disrespectful of all authority, as typical for the creatures from Japanese legend. As a human, she is a sheltered, socially naive girl, who had no idea she is only partly human until her 18th birthday when a particularly bad betrayal turned her temporarily into a massive ogre beast.

She looks adorable. I wouldn't mind have her as a friend (or more).
So what's her story? What are the reasons for her demonic condition?

If I may be so bold, I have a rough idea of a background story of her parents' species.
The Onis are facing extinction since the Unification of Japan by the ruthless Tokugawa Ieyasu, who longed for a safe and secure Japanese society. For this reason he proceeded, through the creation of highly trained cadre, to hunt down and destroy any sort of threats to his rule. Of course, Onis, as evil spirits and "worthless remnants of the old obscurantism" (although they were more like territorial, impulsive creatures than actually pure evil), were one of the top priorities.
At one point, the purge's casualties became so elevated that, despite a fierce and bloody resistance, the demons were driven out from their forests, ending up hiding deep into the mountains.
However, in order to survive, the original Onis abducted human females in order to transfer their inheritance and ensure the survival of their species. It worked: shape-shifting hybrids were born from such unholy unions and, in time, they slowly blended into society, while at the same time learning to control their Wild Selves.
However, when the Bombs hit Hiroshima and Nagasaki, many of such hybrids were almost ratted out by their own hidden nature. For their screams, when Japanese soil became tainted by nuclear fire, sounded monstrous and almost unnatural as Man's madness. These multiple accidents caught the attention of the descendants of the old Tokugawa's Cadre, who proceeded to reprise the hunt for Japan's inner enemies. All such events, obviously, led to the discovery of Megumi's parents, two Oni hybrids living near Shiretoko National Park, by the trained soldiers who promptly executed them after days of gory hunt.
Still, Megumi lived, and so forth...
Of course, this is just a proposition. The story remains yours, and you have all rights to claim it as such.

Wow, that's quite a vivid story you whipped up. It's got a lot of elements I like, including the links to Japanese history and the hybrid shape-shifters. Don't be surprised if I end up using some of this stuff. Thanks very much, and I hope the world I create ends up being this rich in color!
