Description The Green Man is a very intriguing figure found throughout Europe. The figure of a man's face formed from or sprouting leaves has been found from the British Isles to Germany, and even is depicted in present day in art and design.

I've always wanted to try my hand at creating a Green Man mask! I was fortunate enough to have someone request one, which gave me an excuse to try a very complex mask. I love oak leaves, and I love the way oak leaves look when made of leather, but I do not love cutting out alllll those lobes. :x My hands did not like me after cutting out the outer edges of the leaves of the mask itself, then each individual leather leaf that I attached.

All in all, this is a 4-layer mask. There is the mask itself, then two layers of leaves behind, then one leaf on the front. For this mask, I used leather cord instead of the regular ribbons I use, since it seemed to compliment the design better.

I was the one that custom ordered this mask and it arrived a few days ago. It looks just as awesome in person as it does in the photos. I love it! (:

It's a little tight around the inside of the eyes but I can fix that up myself with some leather snips (:

Oh no! See, I have narrow eyes (as in they're closer together than most), and when I'm 'test fitting' a mask, sometimes I forget that even if it fits me fine, the eyes might not be suitable for someone with...normal width eyes.

If you want, you can send the mask to me and I can widen the eyes for no charge (and touch up the paint). Or, if you want to do it yourself, I would recommend using an x-acto blade so you can gradually shave away the extra leather. Leather shears might take too much off, since you're cutting from a curved surface.

wee it's so neat to see your take on the Greenman! :3 It's interesting to see how different mask-makers take it the same theme according to our style. I love how yours has so much care and attention to all the different hues of green and veins in the leaves.

If it helps make cutting curves easier, my filigree wallet leather book gave me a great tip on cutting out tight curves and that was to use a drive punch in the smallest crooks! Then use the straight blade for the rest. It's how I saved my hands trying to cut those curves in the thicker leather.

I love the shading from light green to dark on the leaves, and I agree with you; leather cords do go well with the design.

Ah, thought so, just wanted to ask. And, I am not sure how you cut the leaves, but from what you said it seems that you do each one of them by hand. Well, I have this leather hair piece cut in the shape of an oak leaf, and I watched the gentleman at the Renaissance Fair make them, and he basically used like a bladed "stamp" which looked like a cookie cutter to make the leaves. Might be less painful for you. Or, hell, maybe you just wanna make all of them different and suffer, haha.

Love it!

And it reminds me fondly of a friend of mine in Austin, a tall man with long browngold hair who masked as a Green Man for a local haunted Halloween trail. I wonder if the mask is still hanging on their wall? Just craft-store leaves on a plastic base, though; nothing like your gorgeous craftmanship here.

I started leather working in 2009. I'm still learning, but most of what I do are masks and keychains.
