Spade's life seemed destined to be riddled with misfortune before it even started. With her father dying mere weeks before her birth, she was raised only by her widowed mother, who became less than thrilled to raise a child following her husband's passing. To say that the relationship between Sophia and her mom was less than ideal would be an understatement, as the both of them could barely stand each other. It was during this strained childhood Sophia became fascinated with the idea of magic. Whether it was watching live performances or reading fantastical fantasy stories, the idea of harnessing powers that could transcend the laws of nature was all too appealing to her.

When Sophia reached adulthood, she wasted no time in leaving behind her old life to pursue her dreams of becoming a world renowned performer; taking her leave without so much as a goodbye to her mother. For the next couple of years, Sophia, now known as Spade the Magician, would become a small time success, putting her years of repressed practicing to good use by putting on live shows that proved popular enough to be profitable. Unfortunately though, this success began to fizzle out overtime. Disgruntled and out of options, Spade became a vagrant. Traveling aimlessly at first, Spade soon set her sights on Las Vegas, hoping that she would be able to start her life over again once she got there. To some extent, she did, as when she finally reached Vegas she turned to a life of thievery and cons. If she wasn't simply robbing people of their valuables under the cover of night, she was running hustles and cheating at high stake poker games.

Becoming confident in her abilities, her complacency would become her undoing one fateful night, where she was shot dead after being caught cheating in what should have been just another game of rigged poker. After her murder Spade’s spirit entered the afterlife, and as a result of her all her crimes, arrogance, and greed, she was cast down into the underworld as punishment for her sins. Spade would remain in the underworld for many decades, learning and practicing the dark magics present there, until a small band of cultists summoned her back to Earth. Intending to sacrifice a young woman named Hart in the demon's honor, Spade found the idea distasteful, and so she killed her would be worshipers and freed the hostage, who felt indebted to the demonic magician. Spade would offer Hart a place at her side as her personal assistant, and Hart agreed.

Having been returned to Earth, Spade wished to give her old dream of becoming a world renowned magician a second chance now that she had the powers needed to make it happen. Together, both Spade and Hart set off to find fame and fortune through the use of sorcery and a little bit of trickery.
