Description Back in my second year of the animation course, our teacher gave us small assignments once... He gave us some model sheets and storyboards and told us to draw what was happening in the storyboards but to improve on the action, poses and expressions and draw it as much on model as possible.

But instead of handing it in each week, he would check up on it each week, make suggestions and well, we weren't sure when it was to be handed in. The storyboards involved characters like Wile E. Coyote, Beetlejuice, Krusty the Clown and Pietro Maximoff AKA Quicksilver from the X-Men: Evolution show. There were three boards to reproduce for each.

Anyway, at one time, he finally told us to pick only the best of each.

This was me trying to draw Beetlejuice on model. I had a hard time figuring him out for some reason. I love his design though.

Enjoy,

~Guy H.L.

Beetlejuice AKA Betelgeuse is the character from the TV show created by Tim Burton based on the movie. I do not claim to have created or designed him but I loved the show as a kid. I watched it religiously.

If i didn't know any better I'd think it was traced.

So, is that compliment? hahaha Seriously, I don't see who would trace and bother putting any "construction" lines. I thought this was a troll comment at first but decided to bite and see if you'd reply and tell me whether you know better...

It's a compliment. That's why I said if I didn't know any better. Meaning If I didn't know that you actually drew this, it is so perfect that I'd think you traced it.

So basically I'm saying you're perfect at drawing him.

Thanks... Sorry if I came on a bit strong... It's hard to tell sometimes online... Since I can't see you and such.

I just have a bad opinion of tracing in general... At first glimpse, a traced drawing can seem good but to one who knows, a traced drawing doesn't look that good.

Anyhoo, thanks once again. I prefer my other Beetlejuice drawings but glad you like these ones.

hey bud show meh how to draw beejs eyes plzzzz

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WinkGuy1 In reply to BlackOkamiAngel [2011-09-11 22:33:10 +0000 UTC]

Hi Roxane, that's kind of hard to describe on here. I'm not sure if I could just using words. In person, with pencil and paper... It would be a lot easier... But, of course... If you are in Japan and me in Canada... well, haha... That would be impossible... So, that leaves a third possible option. Do you have an instant messenger such as Yahoo, MSN(Windows Live), Skype or Camfrog? If so, let me know in a note. That's the only way I can think of where I could tell you more about drawing eyes.

Of course, drawing is all about observation and practice. Using reference is a good thing too. Don't trace, just put a drawing or several drawings close by, look at them and think about proportions, sizes, etc. when you're drawing.

wow great drawing of beetlejuice. wanting to become a cartoon animator my self i also used model sheets that i found from google to learn how to draw beetlejuice. my drawings don't really look like the drawings from the tv show but if i practice enough hopefully i will get better at my drawings. I even tryed to animate beetlejuice in some short cartoon animations that i put up on youtube.com just type in kelleytoons and you can see them.

you're welcome. and like i said before, you have very good beetlejuice cartoon sketches. they look just like the same drawings like on the old TV show. If the cartoon show was still on the air, you would be great as a beetlejuice cartoon animator. So if my memory is right, you learned how to draw beetlejuice with model sheets of him? if so, cool. that's how I learned how to draw him too. awhile back, google.com use to have some beetlejuice model sheets. so that's how I found some model sheets of him and that's how I learned how to draw him. I also wish i could find more beetlejuice model sheets on google. but the ones that I found are not what I was looking for. The ones that I did save from google awhile back have different head shots of him and also different moods. I practice drawing beetlejuice almost every day because as a cartoonist who wants to be an animator, I would have liked to have been a cartoon animator for beetlejuice. to bad, they stopped making the cartoon show. and any way I hope you like my short cartoon animations and after you're done watching them, tell me what you think about them? are they funny to you? and do I need to go back and re-do and fix any of them if needed. thank you and you're welcome again.

Wow! Awesome job! I agree with OpalLynn, it jumps out. You gave him some nice detail. I wish I could draw him. You don't take commissions for random B sketches by any chance do you

Hi, sorry for my belated reply. Thank you very much for the compliment... I don't see what you guys see as much here as in my piece titled "A Juicy Time 2" but thank you very much either way, this one piece, seems somewhat popular with people on dA but no one has ever asked me for a commission on here.

We could talk about it in notes if you want to.

Definitely looks on model to me! The thing about this that really makes me gawk is how 3-D he looks. Honestly, in that respect he looks BETTER than the cartoon ever made him look; he positively pops off the page! (I always thought the animation on that show as REALLY cheap and not altogether good, especially in the first few seasons)

WinkGuy1 In reply to OpalLynn [2008-10-16 00:19:11 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much.

It's been so long since I've seen the show, I don't remember much about the animation... It's a bit vague... I remember bits of this and that, like what was on TV in the "Neitherworld"...

OpalLynn In reply to WinkGuy1 [2008-10-16 00:23:40 +0000 UTC]

honestly I never watched it as a kid; I've seen a few episodes here and there but altogether I'm much more of a movie fan. It's weird, because the cartoon seems to be so much more popular than the film that inspired it... especially here on dA

hmmm.

WinkGuy1 In reply to OpalLynn [2008-10-16 00:56:25 +0000 UTC]

Maybe you were too young when it first came out... And only discovered it later on and noticed the flaws first... I'm not teasing you about your age, I'm just saying that might be a possibility... There are some things I've watched as a kid of which I'm still nostalgic about and still enjoy but there's other stuff... well, only nostalgia prevents me from hating it...

As for me, I loved both the cartoon and the movie... But I guess I watched the TV show more often since I grew up watching it and never owned a copy of the Tim Burton movie... I guess I have more memories from the TV show even if they are vague... Oh, and I also had a computer game based on the show.

Oh, and Keaton rocked as Beej. I was really surprised when I was old enough and found out he was under all that makeup.

OpalLynn In reply to WinkGuy1 [2008-10-16 01:24:23 +0000 UTC]

Nah, I was definitely old enough; I remember it quite distinctly being on TV when I was a kid; I just never really liked it. I remember HATING all the puns for whatever reason... maybe I was a snotty kid or something.

Thanks for the insight!

(Dang, I didn't reply right so I have to repost this )

I'm glad you do.

I saw a short called Bad Dog in which Tim Burton was credited... I think it was for character design. But that short was done after, in 1993. Although, I found out on IMDB that Burton worked for Disney as a conceptual artist before.
