I would like to agree, but i think there is a difference between those two.
The Tantabus is a artificialy created being by Luna to remind her of her downfall. It does only what it was created to do.
Nightmare Moon on the other hand is something more primal, a subconcious feeling that grew stronger over the years, until Luna embraced it fully and allowed it to give her a new form.
Nightmare Moon is not a seperate entity like the Tantabus, but more like a part of Lunas personality that ran amok.

Or at least that's in my book.

Everybody else can see it like he/she pleases after all.

Well, yes, that's what I was thinking too. Although, I was always sure that Nightmare Moon is indeed a separate entity inside of Luna, who's there for unknown reasons. Not like an evil ghost who possesses Luna, but like a second personality that has no own body, but is conscious. Basically like with someone who suffers from MPD, except that it's no disease in this case, more like a magical anomaly.
The question now is, how did this different entity originate? The show never specified this to us, it was only said that Luna was jealous and that she turned into Nightmare Moon, somehow.
Now with this episode we have to reconsider, because it gave a possible explanation where Nightmare Moon came from. Maybe Luna also created her subconsciously without noticing and only noticed Nightmare Moon's presence when she was already strong and when it was basically too late.

I still think that Nightmare Moon is Luna just, as much as Luna Nightmare Moon is. The Tantabus seems to be more in a rebelous creation - creationist relationship with Luna, but it's a seperate entity outside of Luna's body.
Nightmare Moon though was Luna at some point. It took over her body, like a moodswing. Like a shift from too nice to evil.
Both seem very different to me.

Maybe the show will pick it up at some point.
For now it seems we are bound to mere speculation.

But it's fun to think about stuff like that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but do you want to say that Luna and Nightmare Moon are the same entity? Cause that would be wrong.
Nightmare Moon herself said that she isn't Luna (can be heard in the S4 Opener), so she's a completely different being.
It's still possible that Nightmare Moon is a splintered off fragment of Luna's subconscious mind that took on a personality on it's own. Like Applebloom's Shadow was a part of her subconscious mind, but a being on its own, able to talk and interact with her.
But the Tantabus is a possibility too. It's true that he was able to leave Luna's body, but he was also inside of her body. We see how he enters Luna's body again at the end of the episode.
And the Tantabus who became Nightmare Moon in the past must not have necessarily made the same decisions as the one we saw in "Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep?".
He maybe decided to wait until he's strong enough to take over Luna's body, instead of trying to escape in the real world by ripping a hole into the fabric of the dream world.
It always seemed unlikely to me that a simple switch in personality should be able to change Luna's outer appearance. I always thought that a separate entity lived or was created inside of Luna and that this entity is Nightmare Moon. The Tantabus fits into this scheme.
I can also imagine that Luna wanted to create a Tantabus in the past, but that she wasn't skilled enough yet and that something went wrong because of that, which lead to it that a part of Luna's mind was split off as Nightmare Moon. And maybe Nightmare Moon was even friendly at first and only became evil later on, when Luna began to become jealous on Celestia and when Nightmare Moon was influenced by those negative feelings.
Anyway, since the episode aired, I'm sure Nightmare Moon's origin has something to do with the Tantabus.
And even more interesting I find the question, what will happen, now that Luna doesn't punish herself anymore with the Tantabus' help?
Reminding her on what Nightmare Moon did by letting the Tantabus give her a nightmare where she ended up becoming Nightmare Moon again and killing Twilight and her friends over and over again was what prevented her from giving in to negative feelings again, but now that the Tantabus is gone.....
I can see signs for it that she still hasn't left behind her jealousy and loneliness and general unhappyness with just being the Princess of the Night since Season 3 and reckon since then with it that she will become Nightmare Moon again one day.
And the Tantabus was all that kept her in check, but it's gone now. So, it might happen again now, as much as I hate to think about it.
