He emerged from the passageway to find himself in a more spacious corridor. Like the rest of the station, only dim lights illuminate the metal confine; even the bright crimson lights of the EXIT sign atop the passage-way entrance to the hanger docks barely penetrate the shadow that seemingly shroud the entire station like a fog. In the corners, the deep darkness huddled, as if hidden predators dwell within waiting to pounce.
The astronaut took note of his surroundings: He was alone, as he had been for the last hour, and the silence was deafening. The only sound he heard was his own breathing, and the clanking of his boots upon the metal floor as he stomped forward in his cumbersome spacesuit, the magnets keeping him in contact with the ground in the zero-g environment.
The scene was unnerving; several thousand people once lived and worked in this station, yet so far, there wasn't even a single evidence, in this corridor or elsewhere, to suggest anyone would had ever been in here. Or to suggest that the station had been visited and used at all. The corridor was empty of life, absent of any object, even the errant trash. Apart from large cracks on the opaque window of a booth, faint clouds of dust in the air, hazes of steam coming from the pipes under the ventilation gratings and around the walls, the whole place was tidy as it was empty, impeccably so.
His solitude was putting him on edge: He felt his heart pounding in his chest, sweat trailing down his forehead, his deepening breaths condensing on his visor before being removed by an automatic wiper. He was starting to feel the cold shiver of fear going down his spine.
He had been thinking about all the possible scenarios that could had caused such a disappearance ever since he came aboard to investigate. An alien attack? A reactor meltdown? A failure in the life-support? Now, as he looked around in yet another empty corridor, he came to the conclusion that none of them would had produced something as... clean, as what he found. There were no signs of a struggle or panicked evacuation, something that he was certain to had occur to account for the disappearance of thousands that once lived and worked here.
He felt like he had came across a Mary Celeste, transplanted into the Space Age. The same enigma, the same question, that plagued those who investigate the vanished crew of the ill-fated boat in the years and centuries afterwards crossed his mind.
What happened to everybody?
